Went to newark autojumble today, Sceptre ran fine until we were sat in the queue to go into the showground. Then the revs dropped and wouldn't pick up when I pressed the throttle, then the engine died completly and wouldn't resart. Fortunatly the guy in front in a '57 Chevy had a tow rope and pulled me in. This took about 10-15 minutes, after that the engine started straight away and ran fine, coming home it lost power a couple of times on roundabouts but picked up again. Engine is a Vauxhall 1.6 EFI with Bosch Jetronic injection from an '88-ish Nova GTE. I'm thinking fuel related, anyone got any ideas? Thanks!!

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

It might be fuel pressure - the pump on the blink, a blockage or fuel pressure reg playing up. The again it could be lots of other things too! I take it 'tis L-Jetronic on your engine (not too up on Vauxhall engines!) Intermittent faults are a pain in the as you never know when it's next gonna happen! Hope it didn't spoil your day at N.O.R.M.O.U.S. - I couldn't get as I was busy but it's always a great day out! I especially like the "Classics only" parking - that's an attraction in itself!

first guess would be blocked fuel line / dodgy pump.... have had it happen to me in the buggy when there is curse word in the tank... floats over the outlet pipe occasionally causing a temp bloackage....

It does sound a lot like fuel starvation to me, could it be fuel vaporisation at all, that would explain why once it cooled down it was alright. Or your fuel pump could be done. There are loads of things.

i've been having a similar problem with my newly purchased manta gte.only had it a bloody week! been curse word about with it all weekend.think i've sorted it though.it started running way too rich and stalled at a junction and wouldnt start again untill it was cold but still ran like a bag o' wibblepoo, churning black smoke out the back.i think it was the flap in the air mass meter that was sticking shut(the box with the air filter in),not letting the correct amount of air through.i've put another one on out of the spares i got with the car and it seems to run a lot better.havnt driven it since however, so i'll find out for definate today! Was so curse word off with it yesterday i got the old trusty carburetored 131 out and used that instead!
Give me a pair of carbs any day!

I think mattblacks EFi will have a hot-wire airflow sensor - these do get covered in curse word and confuse the ecu, but I would think that'd affect idling more than anything. Hicky, I know what you mean about the metering flap - they get choked up with gunk and stick. I've found a good blast of carb cleaner and a toothbrush gets it shifted! I think a garage could test fuel pressure quite easily although it's sods law that the day you take it to them it'll run sweet!!

Had a peer in the tank today.... looks like the paint is flaking/peeling off (typical 60's rootes problem) so when I take it off the road this winter I'll give it a good clean out and change the filter. I put some injector cleaner in the tank the other day, maybe this softened the paint??
When I first fitted the engine I had it tuned as it ran like a bag o' wibblepoo, it was 100% better but I still get some hesitation sometimes, they did report that the fuel pressure sometimes dropped, so maybe a new pump is in order.
BenzBoy, had a good day at Newark, there seemed to be more cars on show than usual for some reason. my favorite was a slammed early 60's Pontiac 4-door in brushed red oxide primer..... yeah, I'm a sick puppy!!! ;D
