A good friend of mine Luke, came over a few days ago to help me clear my garage. He noticed the BMX frames in the corner and discussion turn to his hair brained idea to build drift trikes. Luke and another friend of mine Dave had spent an evening watching drift trike videos on you tube, so I did the only sensible thing to do and get involved too. The following day was spent visiting garden machinery dealerships and council tips, looking for suitable frames, wheels and plastic seats. Anyway photos. First off dismantle the BMX..... Out comes the grinder..... Cut the legs off an old plastic chair.... Rested in place to give an idea of layout.... Dave modelling.... Then because the frame seemed a bit flexible, I've cut and welded the cross bar to strengthen it.... Next step it to find a length of box or L section steel to make a make the back axle.

I do hope it's going to be powered Lol For now it's staying gravity powered ;D have got another frame though so maybe. Found a bit of random box-ish section, to make the rear axle. I've been told that the rear axle should be around one metre, so I cut the bar down to a metre which seems too long IMO. More photos. The cut bar.... Then cut the rear wheel mount to mate up to profile of the bar.... Made sure it mates up nicely.... Then turn up the MIG to max everything and then end up with this.... Think I'm going to reinforce the rear like this...

seen the video, if you know of a uk road this smooth i'd like to drive on it never mind drift trike on it. Yeah a lot of the videos online do seem to be in countries were there road surface is better than ours, but it should still be fun. TBH I'm just enjoying building it, even if it turns out to be unusable! Plus so far all I've had to buy is two 98p cutting discs, everything else I've either been given, found or had lying around anyway. Although I do need some small wheels with inflatable tyres for the rear, it seems as though most of these trikes run small inflatable tyres forced inside a piece of poly tubing. Like so....... Obviously the poly tube acts as the tyre would although with significantly less traction the tyre is just used to grip the tube. The wheels I've seen are 10" with the tyre and come with bearings, they are about £15 for a pair off eBay. Only problem then is getting hold of poly tube with an I/D of 10". Any ideas?

So with the tyre deflated it should go inside a 10" I/D tube, then once it's inflated it shouldn't be going anywhere ;D Does that make sense?

I'd have a look around construction sites for offcuts etc. Most ducting will be too thin wall to be of much use (well for very long anyway) but if you find any offcuts from gas or water mains you should be OK.

Ordered some wheels, bought four of them so we can split the cost Also I may have managed to track down some 250mm I/D gas pipe fingerscrossed

You could, of course, bend up some sheet steel into a hoop (work out the lengths using some formula with pi in it ), weld and flappy wheel it up and you will have SPARKY skid wheels...

Can you buy that id pipe in your regular b&q or homebase?? Me and a few mates were thinking of making some. Could do with finding a good supplyer of that size pipe.

Looking at the vids the wheel seems to vary massively, so presume is more dictated by what pipe you can lay your hands on rather than wheel choice?
Would say most pipe in DIY places would be very thin wall, would work but wear or crack pretty easily. Possibly the thick wall soil pipe around 110mm would last a while though?
