Just acquired a Datsun sunny.
Been driving local, the temp needle stayed at the quarter mark.
But today, been driving for a longer period, it was sitting halfway and 3/4. Never went passed 3/4. Is this normal!

See how you go for a few hundred miles, it could well free itself off - obviously keep an eye on the temperature and make sure the coolant is topped up etc.

don't think you should have a prob, but like cobblers said just keep an eye on it, and may be best to drain the old coolant, and refresh with new if its been standing that long, and chuck in some fresh antifreeze

If it was mine I'd backflush the rad in case it's silted up. What colour is the coolant and have you changed it?

Fresh coolant is always a good move.
As long as the temp gauge doesn't continue rising - and does eventually stop, indicating that the system has reached a steady operating temperature - I wouldn't worry too much. The instruments of yesteryear had a fair old range of production tolerances, so they do sometimes read high even when everything's fine.
As said, do keep an eye on the gauge, and learn what it does - any change is worth investigating. Also, keep a very close eye on the fluid levels - oil, coolant and brake fluid - checking them at least once a week, and before and after any long journeys until you're fairly sure of what it uses normally. Any sudden loss of more fluid than normal should be looked in to: it's normally an early sign of trouble.

For the first week, changed coolant about twice a day. It was really rusty and eventually got better.
I used a hose pipe each time to clear the radiator out. Then I filled with anti freeze and the needle has been on quarter until yesterday. Not used any flushing products for the radiator.

All fluids levels have been okay, no loss loss of coolant or any any other fluid.

Change the coolant and stick a new thermostat in while you're at it. Most cars I've had go over halfway a touch in traffic, then it drops back down once you're off again and the fan kicks in. You're also getting to know the car, you'll be more at ease once you're used to it's ways.
Different car, I know, but when I first had the Golf, it was always at 1/4. changed the coolant, changed the 'stat and temp sensors and now, it's all normal - sits around halfway but can go up a touch/down depending on traffic, weather etc etc.
