The fuel cooler radiator on my modern Rover 75 diesel is leaking.
Can anyone explain why such a device is needed and what pitfalls surround merely by-passing it?

Yes, I was aware of the function!
That's an interesting link thanks. The conclusion appears to be a slight MPG improvement. Also appears to suggest the cooler is more useful when towing on hot days etc. We don't have many of those per year here!

Dear lord the signatures in the linked forum thread are huge! They take up 80% of the thread! Thank goodness we have the 'small signature rule' here at RR.

In the early days of common rail fuel coolers were not fitted. Consequently hot fuel returning to tank had a tendancy to condense and cause excess moisture in the fuel. Not good for fuel pumps and injectors.

Thanks. Must be more to it than that though as the guys in the States are talking of fitting larger coolers with dual fans and claiming an increase in MPG.
Anyway, it was only a hose clip in the end so it's fixed now!

Hi, a few weeks ago Iwas talking to a mate who is a commercial recovery driver. He is seeing quite a few vehicles with filters blocked up with slime, which it turns out is coming from the warmed up fuel in the tank. The slime is algae growing from the bio part of the fuel.

yes that can happen if you're running veg oil too. Usually on cars used for short journeys I believe. When the fuel is proper hot it gets rid of the bacteria apparently. In that case a cooler would make the situation worse!
