In short:  I assume there will be ways around this but I must admit it's been a long day so I'm going to go through it in detail tomorrow when I can focus on my screen! I am sure more informed people will be able to break it down more constructively, as well as expose any loop holes (seems full of question marks), in due course anyway - but I thought I'd get the story up here. The ACE seems quite concerned...

what its actually saying is once a car is modified, it would loose its original type approval, as it no longer conforms to the original manufacturers specification.
as you cannot obtain type approval for a M1 vehicle with a production run of less than 75, this would mean that all vehicles modified away from original manufacturers specification would become liable for IVA.
what they are proposing is not the 'banning' of modified vehicles, but the inspection of them to prove they are of satisfactory standard.
tbh, its been a long time coming. most other countries have had this for years. TUV for example specifies a list of acceptable wheel/tyre sizes you can fit to any particular car.
what is a little odd though is it contradicts the current points scheme that is in practice. they need to decide if the points scheme is staying, or being scrapped totally in favour of a 'any mods and youre going straght to IVA' marker at MOT time.
tbh, the only people who have enough clout to stop something like this are large companies who shift big quantities of bolt on tat, such as halfords. if it stops them selling cheap nasty alloy wheel packages and lowering springs over the counter to the lower end of the modifying market, they WILL get involved.

OK I've read it... and as my planned career path is basically shot down in flames if this passes, I'm keen to do something about it.
Slight issue:
No where in that post does it say how to do anything about it, it just shouts about how we must do "Something"![/i]
It looks more like the implementation of a TUV style system than the banning of all modifications, however either's pretty bad for a large chunk of British industry, and very bad for all of our hobbies.
(PS, Jesus Christ the EU is a massive, ridiculous, pointless, idiotic waste of space, and should sod off back to the pitiful hole they crawled out of. I don't want to live according to some pathetic bureaucrats idea of how my life should be, stop banning everything that gives me choice in life.)

Does this mean vehicles that have been on the road for years can now be made retrospectively illegal? FFS every day in every way i feel more oppressed by curse word in suits,what CAN WE do and when CAN WE start,I'm up for anything my cars and trike feel like the only freedom I have left

Oh yeah, right, you'll just have to get your vehicle tested to make sure it's roadworthy and safe  You know it's going to go bit by bit, what you have here happened pretty much thirty or more years ago here. You'll just have to get your vehicle tested, oh right that's not much. Then it's going to get harder, for example the stupid tyre sizes thing. Then testing your car will get expensive. Then more testing will be required. Then you'll be done modifying your cars. Frankly, I think you don't stand a single chance against this. You might as well give it a go, you have nothing to lose though. Car companies are behind this, and they stand for more wealth and are better connected to the EU parliament than Halfords will ever be. So when you still can, please build as many hotrods and cool cars and all that, just like some French guys built their own cars in the 70's. They are a thing of the past now, and there's no going back. I know this might sound pessimistic, but I know what I'm talking about (and I've already expressed my opinion here as well). |

Yeah, let's please not all bury our heads and think "it's ok, it still allows a way to modify cars". This is a huge leap up a few steps towards zero modifying, and will make what modifying we're still allowed to do a lot harder and more expensive. Please remain just as curse word off as you would be if it was banning it all together. Something needs to be done! I'd just love to know what!

What it is basically saying is that a bunch of Eurocrats can have a few meetings, do a couple of consultations, send a few emails and vote the whole UK car modifying industry nigh on illegal. Your alloy wheels, lowering kits, perhapsbody kits if into hot hatches etc would all be made non-standard, and as such your car would be not testable, therefore non usable.
Don't forget the other implications. Halfords and other suppliers of parts, classic car parts dealers, classic car parts manufacturers, with no work because of an EU ruling. Even as far as magazines aimed at certain marques of modified cars. If there is no market, they ain't gonna sell.
THIS HAS MASSIVE IMPLICATIONS

Nope - it means that the Prairie would have needed a £500 bIVA test (which wouldn't in itself change) before you could put it on the road, due to the wheels and lowering. Which is a bit of a pain. A bigger issue than that is what happens if they don't stop the 8-points things for bIVA but just add 'modifications' as a fail on the MOT: you'll have vehicles that's not eligible for the test that retain their V5C, but can't be MOTd for love nor money. |

'shirely' if a car is never presented for a test, it will never be checked ?

Just for kicks, have a look at the French modified cars thread just under this one, they're all illegal and if someone's hurt in an accident with one of these cars, the owner will have to pay for everything. Sweet, innit? |
