Dug out my shed a sierra 4speed gearbox. Thought it was a type 9, had it next to a granada type 9 with electronic speed drive and the blinking propshaft wont fit. Sierra box is a lot smaller is it called a type c ?
Is this sierra box then worth anything or are they just rubbish. The reason I probably ended up with it when I thought I was getting a bargain !
Will a capri 2.8i 4 speed box take the same propshaft then as a type 9 ie. are the splines the same?
can i put a 4cylinder type 9 bellhousing on a v6 4speed box?
(ps I know about the input shaft being longer etc but I thought I'll just cut the end of it to use on a 4cylinder?)

Sounds like it - does the gearstick screw on with a green plastic knuckle joint thing?
Worthless. I have a pile of them that no-one wants.
Yes. Same splines, close enough on length.
No. Or at least not on a capri one.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

You can't. Capri 2.8 had the type 5 gearbox which looks like this. It is a 3 rail box. iirc the only bellhousings available for the type5 are v6 fitting, english (essex) or german (cologne) Type 9 is totally different - it is derived from the consul/granada 2.5 type E gearbox and is single rail.

right this is starting to make some sense. I've asked for some pictures of the box to be sent to my phone. I understand a bit better now. Thanks for your help.
I guess I'm looking for a 2litre capri box 4speed that'll take a type9 big propshaft.

Type F? Is that the wierd thing with the external linkages? You would be miles better off with a cortina 2.0 4 speed. Leccy drive tailshaft on the T9 is easily swapped for a mechanical one - Drift the rollpin out of the selecter fork (under the gearstick, put it in third for access then return to neutral after the pin is out) undo the 6 bolts holding the tailshaft and the two holding the plate on the side. Remove the side plate, slide the tailshaft housing off the shaft. Now is a good time to fit a rear seal to the new one Re-assembly is obvious. Only gotcha is that if you forget to put it in neutral the spring and pin will miss each other and the gearchange won't work properly.

Many thanks for the replies and the advice on changing the tail on the type 9. I nearly bought a sierra box that was poorly advertised but was outbid thankfully !
