Is it not free flowing enough? Don't think the stuff inside is flammable (unless you're running two stroke!)
In my opinion regardless of the alteration you'd need to take it off. Surely, being a JanSpeed product, it is stainless anyway?

Does it show I'm getting old if I ask why? Drill a hole in it Are there any other boxes in the system you can chop out or gut without damaging the janspeed box. I think you will need to remove parts of the system to modify regardless of what you decide to do. It's only m.8 nuts and fiddly rubbers...

cut a flap in the top, pull out all the deadening, then weld it up. i did that to a janspeed a few years ago, still have it. sounds so good ;D

I'd say flog the Janspeed and buy a Sportex backbox. They are quite loud!
Saying that, the Janspeed on my 106 GTi was not what I would call quiet!
