I do like a nice 106. I had a 1994 S1 Rallye in red that I loved very much. It handled like a dream as standard, and even better on the 205 1.9 GTi rims I fitted. Nice, predictable lift-off oversteer in the wet which was great fun when you were in the mood, but a bit scary if you had to brake mid corner... Cracking engine too - Just loved to rev. I took it all the way the South of France in 1998 to watch the World Cup. The only thing that upset me a bit was the shoddy build quality - The interior trim was a brittle as a plastic egg box, the black seats went grey and the red carpets went pink! I must admit the build quality isn't exactly briliant!! but my brother owned a Talbot Samba so this is practically at Mercedes levels in comparrison. There's various bits of loose, faded, or broken trim on the car, all of which will be keeping my local scrap yards and eBay account in business for the next few months I'm sure As you say the handling is a lot of fun, especially the classic lift off oversteer. Which ill admit too doing exiting off an island into a corner at speed on the way to work, as i lifited off a little the back end went pretty sideways.. My boss was behind me at the time in his Seat Leon, he asked if i was planning on becoming a rally driver soon!!

Any updates on your 106 Pabblo ? 😉 Hi slacky, I did sell this one a while back as at the time I needed a bigger car But last year I replaced it with another 106, unfortunately despite the early face lift cars coming out in 1996. This one I bought is from 2002, so a bit too new for RR. This is the only pic I have of it on my computer, looking dirty and unloved when I first got it! When I first got it, it had no spare wheel and a missing wheel bolt! But for a £250 car, with a long MOT I've bought worse lol I've done a fair bit to it with my brothers help, a rear bumper replacement. A new heater motor, oh and respraying the underside of the boot floor as you do!! In addition I had to get a mechanic friend to help, as the head gasket leak had been bodged. With a rag stuffed in behind the cambelt cover, and silicon-ed where the leak was!! So a new head gasket, cambelt & water pump has been fitted. Also it's had a new center & rear exhaust, plus a full service. Next job for me is to replace the floor carpet, and one of the wheel arch liners as it's cracked. And tidy some wiring under the bonnet, as well as a clean of the engine bay. I like to keep busy, and this car has given me more confidence to try and do more myself in future. I've certainly got enough projects, so I won't be sort of work. Eventually I'd like to get another pre 1996 106, either another XS or XSi if I can find a good one. But this one is keeping me busy, along with the Fiat's!!
