Anyone 'up' on aircooled lumps...? My T25 has a 2 litre flat 4 with hydraulic tappets. i got a dry tappet noise on the r/hand bank and its throwing oil out of the left hand side rocker cover straight on the exhaust.. i have been told they run dry if stood and a 5 mile journey should sort it out..its a common fault.. bit reluctant too, with oil leak... Anyone had this problem with a bug/bus ?

Wheres the oil actually coming from?
Is it getting past the rocker cover gasket or from one of the pushrod tubes?
Dry tappets are quite common and usually quiten up with a few miles and an oil change.

mdh....thanks for reply..oil is coming through rocker cover gasket. Its done this before but cleared with an oil change, but not this time. When engine is quiet and no tappet noise, engine becomes oil tight.. On various sites people have complained of same probs, even youtube threads.. But..I'm wondering if i have oil pressure problems. I took pressure relief valve out, a plunger and a spring, it seemed to be moving in its tube ok, I'm guessing this bypasses oil cooler when cold?

LoL!!
VW rocker cover gaskets ALWAYS leak. The covers are held on with a spring clip thingy, so check thats on properly. Otherwise change the gasket, they're really cheap.
Last time I did some I silicon'd both sides of the gasket, and that stopped it weeping.
Now put the stick down!! ;-)

i had those very symptoms on my type 4 lump. you need to re-adjust the lifters. you should be able to get the info from a haynes book of untruth. if you cant lay your hands on one give me a shout and il try to remember the procedure for you. its not a difficult job, should only take half an hour or so.

yes, got the haynes, i have a look tmorro.. you adjust clearances on hydraulic lifters? I don't think rocker gasket is the problem, it just seems to be too much oil in the left bank, as its dry and knocking on the right.. as i said, its done it before, rattled and leaked oil, then when tappets have gone quiet, its stopped the leakage of oil... its doin me head in!... Have put the big stick on hold, till i have thumbed the haynes....

its more pre loading them rather than setting a clearance. i cant remember how many turns the haynes says once the screw touches the lifter, but i did one and a half turns on mine, after reading it on a link i cant seem to find at the mo. ive lost no oil past the rocker gaskets since.

i don't know why they do it, but yes, my type 4 was leaking severely from both sides when i got it. someone had tried the silicon trick to stop it but the pressure just pushed it past anyway. i reset the preload and its been fine ever since. no oil has passed the rocker gaskets. i used info from the haynes book and this link clicky to sort it.

i uesed to work on aircooled moters as an ex-dubber,carry a can of oil, keep an eye on the oil light,if it flashes...stop,top it up ...do the five miles......somestimes the engine gets hot enough and seals the gasket ...it works about 60-75 %of the time.......just carry oil...whats to lose???good luck

Update.. took it for a run, still no go..
Took o/side rocker cover off. Number 1 cylinder (rear) Exhaust rocker arm, banging away,a big gap!
Found very small lump of metal what rocker rocked on... has broken off..fell on the floor... .. (looked like a tiny watch battery) End of valve I guess?
I adjusted the clearance to suit and its sweet as a nut..
Still leaking a bit from other bank- i may have 2 problems all along..
