I finally fitted PAS to my mums MX5 today, and upon fitting it all found that the PAS cooler pipe had a crack in it and poured fluid all over the road. A mad rush to a local MX5 specialist just as they were closing got me another one, but I got home and it turned out to be different and wouldn't fit. The cooler is just a loop of steel pipe, maybe ~ 1.5m in total length if you straightened it out: To get the car back on the road I've just bypassed the thing with a 20cm long length of pipe cut off the old one. I drove the car around for 15 minutes and the fluid felt about 60/70 degrees C. I've never paid a lot of attention, but I'm sure a fair few cars don't even run these coolers at all - I don't remember seeing one on my old Saxo, nor the MK3 golfs I've stripped. Again, I never really paid a lot of attention so I could be wrong. I've also never paid any attention to how hot the fluid gets in "normal use". I fully intend to eventually source and fit a cooler, but do I really need to rush about it, or will it be OK for a while?

Should be fine, especially if the weather carries on as it is! On something like an MX5, it's probably a bit of overkill in most circumstances in the UK (different countries/climates will probably be a different matter)
How do you think the pipe got split? It was definitely OK when I sold it, I'd driven the car for two weeks previous to stripping it and it never dropped any oil (engine, box or steering). The pipes run through a bracket on the bottom of the nearside chassis leg which you have to pass the pipes through because its welded in place. It's a tight fit but I specifically cut the bracket off (knowing the car was going to a scrapyard) so that I could remove the pipes without any risk of bending or splitting them.
Like I say, you should be fine to run it without for the time being. If the weather suddenly gets really hot (yeah, right!) then you might want to look at fitting a cooler again.

I don't doubt it was fine when removed Bruce - it was just a bit crispy and delicate so it could have gone anywhere between coming off the car and me finishing fitting. At a guess I'd say I probably bust it when I muscled it through the ARB bracket.
What year/car was the setup off? The cooler I got from MX5city is about 10" shorter on both the ends. No idea why they changed them!

I'm pretty sure the car was a '93 (deffo a Eunos not a UK MX5) I didn't know there were any differences in the systems either? Best of luck with it.

Its more likely to get hot while trying to park and shuffling round a car park than it is out on the open road, trapped engine heat, lack of airflow and lots of steering lock will warm it up double quick at low speeds.
Can't see it being an issue temporarily, but i've killed enough autoboxes by overheating them to know these things tend to need the coolers they are fitted with. :S

I'm running a loop of rubber hose on my Range Rover, Was intending to make a metal one but not got around to it. Seems okay.

Thanks for that everyone. I'll have a run over to see if the MX5 bloke has another cooler tomorrow, if not it can stay as it is for the forseeable future!

The wedge Rover's had the same PAS cooler design as the MX5, but the bubble's don't yet they use the same rack and pump. I'm guessing a mix of over designed on the wedge and cost cutting on the bubble.
I don't know if PAS fluid is hydroscopic liKe brake fluid but given it sounds like you've got fresh in there you should be ok.
