Hey all, It`s been awhile since I`ve been online, but I actually have a question that you guys can help with. A friend of mine has an `87 Chevrolet Chevette(with a 1.6L Isuzu G161Z), and he is wanting to fit a turbocharger to it. We already swapped in a four speed, with the auto it was almost painfully slow to drive and passing people was a pipe dream. Most emissions junk has been deleted. I know you guys mostly deal with small displacement engines, and the guys I run with are mostly large displacement(bigger than 5L ). He is wanting to stay carburetted, but that is about the only thing we have decided so far. I`ll be doing most of the fabrication work(I`m competent with a mig, and ok with a stick). We have no emissions/inspections here to pass. The general plan is to modify his stock exhaust manifold to mount the turbo to(don`t know what kind yet), modify his stock intake to mount a bigger, better carb(think maybe a weber DGEV, not sure though). Planning blowthrough without an intercooler for now, unless anyone can convince us otherwise. Won`t run too much boost, stock CR for the American `vette is ~8.3:1. Backup plan is to make new, tubular intake and exhaust. Gonna try and avoid that, as he is on a budget(who isn`t ). Any flaws with our plan? Any general advice? Anything at all? A few thoughts.. How ya gonna seal that carb? How are you gonna control your ignition timing? If it was me, I'd dump the antique dizzy and carb for a megasquirt & trottle body set up. Have a look here www.turbofast.com.au/javacalc.html for some useful apps.

Have a look here www.turbofast.com.au/javacalc.html for some useful apps. I`ve seen a few articles covering setting up the Weber for blowthrough, which is why it has been tentatively picked. I couldn`t find a better option for a small engine like this. Planning on leaving the dizzy for now. I`d like to go megasquirt, but it`s not my car. Of course, I would probably just swap out the engine for something that makes more than 4hp to start with ;D I don`t know much about drawthrough carb setups, would this be a better option?

It might be worth looking for a turbo carb from an MG Metro or a Renault 5, obviously they're designed for the job.
Also, keep an eye out for a second hand megajolt kit. Like megasquirt, but limited to spark timing only, so cheaper. There may be similar mappable ignition systems I'm not aware of too.

Nope don't go for a draw through set up. That can cause issues with fuel dropping out of suspension and wetting the manifold walls. Also you need the right seals in the turbo, or it'll draw oil past the seals and burn it.
If you leave the clockwork dizzy in unmodified you're likely to melt a piston. Proper timing control is critical, and clock work just doesn't cut the mustard IMHO.
If you must stay with a carb, how about a side draught? DHLA's can be upgraded for boost with a fairly simple kit. And they look awesome :-D
You might need a rising rate fuel regulator & bigger pump to keep the float bowl full under full boost too.
With a CR that low Id be aiming for 1 bar boost, and a huuuuge grin ;-)

I seem to recall reading somewhere (probably on here) that the Dell'orto equivelant of a Weber will take low pressure boost (5psi?) as standard and are easier to seal for higher pressures.
Also, I believe that some bike carbs will also take boost fairly easily

Lotus used Dell'Ortos in blow-through on the Esprit Turbo, so it can't be that hard.

Dellorto actually made turbo ready carbs, if you can find them.
If not an upgrade kit is £80.
Gotta be better than a crummy old SU of a Metro!

I forgot about the fuel side of things in my original post, I`ve seen stock mechanical fuel pumps boost referenced(with an electric pump to help them keep up), have to do some more research on that. Thanks for the heads up on the draw through setup, I really didn`t know anything about them, but I thought they might have issues like you said(due to a really long path for the fuel). A side draught carb wouldn`t be any harder to adapt then than a weber, I`ll look into those. Thanks for the suggestions on that everybody. Anyone got a good turbo suggestion that we can actually get here in the US? And for those interested, here are some pics of the `vette in question: And yes, it`s his daily. When you said Chevette, I didn't picture that! I was wondering what on earth the engine was that you mentioned. I guess I should pay more attention and read 'Chevrolet' and 'American', rather than getting excited at the word 'Turbo'! The car looks properly mean though, and I quite like the steels on it (even if they're diametrically challenged). I was on my mobile when I replied earlier so didn't catch your location, else I might not have suggested looking for carbs from increasingly rare old Euro boxes. I'm sure there must be some American cars of the early 80s that jumped for turbos before EFI. Incidentely, a very good friend of mine used to live in Chilicothe and always harps on about how he misses it edit: You get Volvos over there right? They've been keen on turbos for ages... I found this page which looks promising but isn't in English... Click on the link for R-Sport link on the left. www.vikeboe.com/re-edit: I translated the page and the parts sound pretty rare. errrm... RX-7 turbo? I should probably stand back now and let someone who has some actual real knowledge help!

Its hard to tell you what car to grab the turbo from as yours are pretty different to what we have here. if you wanna get the right one with out lots of maths, look for a similar capacity car producing the kind of power you want. I know it`s been awhile guys. BUT, there is progress(sorta). The chevette lost it`s engine. It`s probably good we didn`t just slap a turbo on it. My buddy got a little upset with the car(we had just pulled the engine to do the pan gasket), and was going to scrap it . So I bought it. It is currently sitting engine-less. I wanted to do a 4.3L V6 swap, but time/money will not allow that. So it will get another Isuzu 1.6L, no turbo yet, but I`m going to tweak it a bit. Bump the CR, get a cam reground for it, build a header, and eventually modify the intake for a better carb(s). I can keep you guys posted if you`d like. -Jake (PS - I also have another Chevette that I bought before this one, if I can get some pictures I may introduce you to it as well )
