Look, a mate needed money. He had this. I bought it. It's small, French and has a funny air filter on it that makes it go CHURRRB and BURRRRB a lot. Plans? Urm. Yes. Maybe. Smaller steering wheel is top of the list as my fat legs don't fit in there. Humph. basically something fun and cheap for the Gathering, nothing more, nothing less. I'm open to suggestions. More info as and when it happens. Chris

Nice I've had a few of these look nice when they are dropped just watch the torsion bars are not seized personally I'd go for a clean euro look or the rally slag route lol😉

Thanks for the feedback folks. It's all happened a bit suddenly so I don't really know where to go with it. The only solid idea is that it's for the Gathering. As such, I'll get it booked in for a test at the end of the month and then go from there. The guy I've bought it from is a mechanic and a long time drinking buddy, so I trust him when he says it won't need much. Once that's done I'm thinking cheap coilovers (£200), full strip out, buckets and an Area:52/Rich system exhaust (£hefty kitty donation). Oh, and as it's 4x108 I'd like some unusual alloys. I'm sure there'll be lots of other touches along the way. Chris

unusual alloys?
seeing rich at the weekend??
ask him if he's going to use the stalloys he had off me - they are a slightly odd set, but hey!

Almost on the road: b11 sunny breadvan, e36 tds, 325i skidcar,
nearly there: ford f250 tathauler, suzuki alto, u11 bluey
not for a while: ford pop, 32 rails,
not in this lifetime: ruby, '29 hillman

can't do cheep coilovers on these (thank feck!) kinda, they're an insert so you need a rallydesign coilover conversion kit, chop the original spring pan off, whip the insert retaining nut off, slide on threaded tube, refit nut. tack threaded tube in place, fit spring, fit top spring pan, re-assemble

I seem to remember that you have to be a bit careful lowering these. I had a mate with a Saxo & after he lowered it a bit too much something sawed its way through the PAS hose. Possibly the track rod but I can't remember the steering layout from when I owned one.

I had one of these brand new - They're 100 BHP I believe? All I did to mine was put a K&N kit on it so it was quiet when poodling but had great induction roar when booting!
Drove it 40k miles in 18 months, down to Portugal and around Spain - Loved it.

Nice buy Poll, had a VTR a few years ago and it's probably the most fun I've had with my trousers on. Went rally slag with that and took it on road rallies/track days/autotests/anything else I could find and it was brilliant. Dailyed it for about 8 months too ;D Mid handbrake turn:

All I would do Po is coilovers with 15" Speedlines from a 205 GTi, strip the back out and fit buckets. Finally, fit the most unreasonable and socially offensive lights on the front!

Saab 900/9000 are 4x108 15x5.5 (or 15x6 for Super Aeros) if you fancy some different three spokes. To be honest I never hear a bad word about the 106/306. Plenty of faults, but always followed by 'enormous fun to chuck around'.

The Quiksilvers come with 75BHP as standard although if I am honest they are probably the best compromise out of the 106 range (half decent suspension, enough poke to be fun yet quite frugal in addition to being cheap to maintain). To make life easier on the wallet of the spares are quite reasonably priced too. Gaz also do a GHA Coilover kit that people have had success with (It comes with the insert cups etc. that Merion (Welshpug) talks about). Depending on how tight the budget is and how iffy the suspension is (lower arms on the front seem to last well if OE/genuine (the balljoints seem to die first due to knackered boots I would look into getting the rear beam mounts polybushed. I know that on my 205 (I went solid I admit) the backend was still willing to play, but it was far more predictable. The 106 was a bit of a culture shock in that respect when I jumped into it after being in the 205 (it tried to go sideways quite a bit of time!). Wheel choice is good on these, but the offset is quite low for a FWD car (around ET19-13 IIRC) which will require a combination of large spacers and bolts from other cars . They're great fun aren't they? I still miss my 106 GTi but well, this game is like a journey. Plenty of cars to try and see if they float your boat .
