helo, I'm back again to mither you all with more questions so, ive finally found some 16" steels for the merc. only 6.5j though. i want the stetched tyre look. it looks like the prime tyre candidates are 165/40, 175/55, 175/60 how much wider would the wheels benefit from being? or would anyo of the abouve tyres look good on a 6.5? post up any pics you have of stretched tyres on steels if you will please.

165/40s would seme the obvious choice out of that lot but i havent done the maths so its only a educated guess.

thats what I'm thinking, but itll plums my gear ratios. 175/55 or 175/60 on a wider rim wouldnt......

can you get 165/40x16 tyres? WTF is the standard application of that then?

my first purchase on the wide wheels front...... 6.5jx16merc pattern this is where I'm gunna have to get clever. as you can see, a 165/40 wont cut it in the stretching stakes, even on a 6.5" rim. it will also bollo my gear ratios bigtime, as the radius is 48.6mil less. but, a 175/60 is only 9.6mm less. but I'm gunna need a 9" rim for those. this is what I'm gunna do- cut on red line. the red line is exactly over where the centre sits. theres a reson for that. throw away right hand part (Front) of the rim. get a second, identical set of rims. cut in the same place. keep the left hand part, bin the centre and the right hand part. slide the peice form the second wheel on, tap it down into place, allign and weld. this will give me a 9j steel with a wide offset. the rear offset should be about right, i might have to tweak the fronts. ive also come up with a clever way of making accurate cuts on the wheels without having a lathe. if everything goes to plan ile have another set of wheels next week so ile be able to post up some progress pics then. this way of doing it will give me a totally legal, 100% accurately alligned pair of rims that look rather cool!!

Sounds like your a man with a plan, be interested in the progress pics! I don't think you neccesarily need a lathe to cut the wheels accurately like you say, although I dare say it makes it a damn site easier. Who's doing the welding?

Who's doing the welding? i am. ive done 5 sets of different re-rims and reverse rims, this is the last set i did for my 'rod- 5 stud bug centre trimmed to fit into the back of 7x15 weller rims, reversed to get big offset.

Surface table and angle grinder with slitting disc clamped securely to something heavy ;D a variation on that. bay spindle and disc held in the vice, jig weded to spindle that the grinder bolts to via the handle threaded boss- can turn the wheel by hand whist siveling the grinder with the other to adjust cutting pressure.
