iv had this problem a while now and cant find the answer, whenever it rains my car looses power every few seconds it also idles at 500rpm for a few seconds when I'm stopped then it sort of builds back up then drops back down. its a volvo 340 with a clio 1.8 f7p. i sprayed the whole engine with water to see if the problem would show its self but it didnt really, however when i sprayed the coil the revs really dropped and the engine went off. the coil is on the chasis leg so it can get some rain but I'm not 100% sure this is the problem. any help or ideas would be much appreciated

Sounds like water ingress to the ignition shorting something out. Try replacing your HT leads if they're old, also clean the coil up off the car and carefully examine it for cracks on the plastic end cap where the terminals are.

does the coil make any heat? i was thinking of putin some water proof tape to cover some bits of it

if i were you, id go over all the wiring with a solder gun and properly heat shrink/wrap it all. sounds like a crank position sensor wiring issue. a clie we had at work was doing exactly the same - turns out someone bodged in a replacement and used crimp connectors to wire it in. whenever it rained, the car would idle curse word and have no power. we sprayed wd40 down there and covered it in isolation tape and the woman hasnt been back since
