Hey all, There I was happily driving my (modern) daily around Croydon whilst visiting my Grandma when I met this fella in the road this pic was taken standing but from the lower position from the driving seat it really didn't look much. I even steered around what looked like the worst bit and thought I'd missed it.... until the bang. Which did this to my wheel I've heard of people claiming against the council for damage such as this, so my question is: Has anyone on here successfully done so and what would your top tips be? Normally I take these kind of things on the chin (afterall, in life s**t happens right?) but when I went back to take a photo I observed people swerving about to miss the hole as it's quite unseen until close. This hole is flipping deep and clearly been inadequately repaired before so maybe the council are liable in some way. Any advice gratefully received, thanks chaps! James *edit* I've no idea why the photos are big and the top one is sideways, they aren't like that in my Photobucket account only when displayed on here.

I had something very similar happen to my old Alfa 155. I managed to get a new wheel and tyre from the council though it took a while. I would suggest being very firm and honest, the moment you sound like your trying it on by "shouting to loud" they will fob you off.

Unfortunately, I think the council can only be liable if you can prove they knew about the pothole. Check www.fixmystreet.co.uk and see if it's been reported.

I thought that it was the other way round, ie, if they've marked it with an outline or similar then you can't claim as they are acting on it.... which this one isnt.

Might be worth PMing Skinnylew on here, he deals with this sort of thing for a living.

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

Had 2 Low profile tyres egged last week in my street ,you cant see the holes in the rain! anyway my tyres are 19'' and fooked.I had reported the same holes a few months ago and the council repaired a single hole .well there were at least 10 holes which i photographed etc ,I sent a new email explaining the new damage to my tyres with the new photos of the holes ,Yesterday i receive a reply telling me they would be sending someone to look at the road etc.(Today they have been all repaired !!! ),And a they sent me a direct address for the councils insurance department .i have to get the repairs done and send them a full letter with all details .i suspect i will need to get a trye experts report to send in .I have yet to check my rear rims so will get them looked at before i send my claim in ...How annoying is it that we are being forced to drive on third world type roads in quality cars ...

I did successfully claim from the local county council several years ago for wheel and suspension damage. Provided photos showning dimensions of hole along with bills for repairs. Recently claimed for damage to daughters car but despite photograhic details etc along with numerous letters got no where. Also heard that the local county council stopped all claims for damage to wheels supplied by Halfords several years ago due to the poor wheel quality.

Might be worth PMing Skinnylew on here, he deals with this sort of thing for a living. You called ;D Right as said this is what I deal with as a job, I am a Highways Technician for my local Council, not a million miles away from Croydon. There will be criteria that a pothole needs to meet for it to be classified as a pothole, sounds silly but otherwise there would be no legal precedent. That said it has been repaired before, the tarmac in there is cold lay patch asphalt used for temporary repairs. To have the best chance of claiming, take good photos, measurements, include receipts/quotes for repairs basically include as much info as you can. Having done the London to Brighton Night ride recently Croydon and the roads around there were pretty poor, some big potholes and scabbing. Definitely contact them Asap but make sure you get photos and measurements BEFORE or else it will be filled and less likely you'll get to claim. I have 160 roads to look after and I like to think I catch potholes early but I can't be everywhere and It's surprising the speed at which they can occur, something ok on Friday can be awful come monday, especially when it's wet. Looks to be on the sewer line as well so possibly caused by some Thames Water works which would complicate things a bit.

thanks for all the replies guys, some helpful points there. You're a lovely bunch! ;-)
I'll let you know how I get on, but it'll likely be a while it seems before a resolution.
