Here's a poser... I went to a custom car show with my parents, in Donnington I guess, in the mid '80s. One of the custom cars - and I'm sad that I can't remember what it was, but I think Mustang, '70s, had proper metalflake art. If I'm remembering correctly, this painting was bought there from the guy who made the car. The only clue I have is the IE 86 - Initials and year. Curious to know what the car was, whether this style of art is still sold at shows, who did it. I've had it for years and years, just decided to take it from the frame and use as a test of a new copystand I got, and thought it was cool.

IE could refer to Ian Etheridge. He had a Transam covered in metalflake art with an intergallactic theme. The car was featured in Street Machine in the '80s. Was this the car? It's been sitting in the Lakeland Motor Museum for years, but apparently it'll be back on the show circuit this year!

Ooooh, that does look very familiar - and I can imagine a 12-year old me being very excited to see that car! I wonder how many of these paintings were made...

I can remember seeing that at doncaster custom car show when I was a kid! I'll have been 6 or 7. Loved it and would love to read a write up of it!

ahh celestial i have pics of it in some 80's magazine collection thing ('on the road', i really need to post soem scans of the interesting bits out of that as its very retro...) in a section on custom paint, always had a bit of a love of ott 'flake painted cars... Nice to see its still around and its not been abandoned or destroyed like so many old show cars have been That painting is very cool, maybe a little kitch but id hang it on my wall never sen anything else like it though

It may have been Doncaster where I was - my family is from that area, Sheffield/Rotherham etc. If you're not much over 30 we might even have been at the same show I think I've had that painting since we moved from near Retford up to Scotland - it's never had a hanger on it, so it's always been propped on things or in drawers to keep it safe.

Bloody hell. We probably WERE at the same car show. I got taken as a treat though, my parents did not share my car obsession (I suspect if anything, I've put them off cars for life ).

Wow!
Given the time, date, and so forth - for now I am assuming that this picture is by Ian, and that car looks SO much like the one I remember. Though if anyone knows different (what's become of Ian Etheridge, for example? Is he still around somewhere?) I would still greatly appreciate knowing!

I'm being no help what so ever here, but that painting has struck a chord with me. Back in the '80s I'm sure me and my friends used to collect small cards with very similar metalflake illustrations that possibly came free with packets of crisps or similar. Random, but true
