1998 MK4 GTi 1.8 AGN non turbo
Or
1996 MK3 VR6 2.8
I had a BMW E38 and the power was amazing, slow but when it picked up it flew. The 125BHP 1.8 engine is very fuel efficient but the power just isn't there.
Do I bite my tongue and keep with fuel saving or ask the gentlemen to kindly do a swap??
Any thoughts???

IIRC, the non-turbo GTI only has 115bhp and is a total wet lettuce! Have you considered the Golf V5? Red-badge version has 170bhp and fully-loaded interior. (Or do what I did - buy a Leon Cupra 20V T, and get a Golf GTI chassis with a 180bhp Audi TT engine for well under £2k)

Probably better off with the 1.8t than the 1.8, the 1.8 is 115bhp and shouldnt wear the Gti badge. If the 1.8 is fast enough - get a tdi

Neither. Buy an Octavia RS instead. Far quicker, better value, and cheaper to run than the VR6.

^^ Octavia vRS has the same Audi TT-spec 1.8T as the Leon Cupra.

I vote for a Mk1 with either engine.

IIRC, the non-turbo GTI only has 115bhp and is a total wet lettuce! In the mk4 Golf the 1.8 20v non turbo GTi is 125bhp, it's the 2.0 8v GTi that's has 115bhp either way avoid both. Both slow and thirsty, even the 150bhp 1.8 20v Turbo is hardly rapid (has plenty of tuning potential thou). IMO the best mk4 is a TDi one. At least the VR6 has the power to go with the thirst, plus it's one of the best sounding engines going. So the Mk3 for me!

VR6 for the soundtrack, Leon Cupra for a fast practical modern daily.

Thanks all!
The VR6 it is. I've offered him the swap it's just a waiting game to see if he wants it or not. When speaking to him he wanted offers of around 2k. Very very optimistic, I saw a 3 door vr6 in black sell on eBay for £700. So my offer stands at swaps with my car for his. I'd still temp him more with a little bit of cash ontop. Even though I don't want to.
POWER!!!!!

Neither!! How can you go back to fwd after having a rwd car regardless of power?
But if I had to choose would be the VR6.

I've had both, well I have had two Leon Cupras and one VR6
VR6 everyday of the week! They hide rust well though. Floors, wheel arches, inner wheel arches, everywhere!

I don't think you can possibly begin to compare a mk4 non turbo or TDI to a VR6 as they are completely different animals and its far more than HP that separates them.
Out of the two, depending on the condition of the VR6, id much rather a later 96/97 VR6 with a Recaro or leather interior, air con and possibly Cimatronic. Then Id fit a decent panel filter and knock out the centre silencer ;-)
But in an ideal world id have my VR6 in the Corrado or a mk2 and if i had to get a mk4 id have a 4motion. The 20vt mk4 (anniversary aside) just don't cut it and are outclassed by the Octavia VRS and Leon Cupra/Toledo which offer far more kit & practicality.

Neither!! How can you go back to fwd after having a rwd car regardless of power? Easily..... I'd go for the VR6 out of those by a long shot, it'd be a close call if the mk4 was a turbo, but a non turbo I'm not sure it's even a valid question. haha (For the record, a mk4 gt tdi is only quicker than the 1.8t gti if you own one and happen to be in a pub, there's not much in it, but the petrol is quicker.)

IMO the best mk4 is a TDi one. i've got a mk4 2.0gti, and i agree it isnt the most powerful engine about, its quick enough thanks to a nice torque curve, its sits happily at 70+mph all day even when fully loaded. And thirsty? don't think so! 33-35mpg round town and 47mpg on a run two up and full to the brim with gear, and that would probably improve when i get rid of the super lo-pro stretched tyres i'm running. its a simple ,bulletproof engine which can (and does) get easily fixed at home.
