the other day I was informed I was going to be given an astra. no other information than that, engine size, model, age, I knew nothing just that it was an astra. well the day came earlier this week where it arrived. I was a little apprehensive at first and wasnt sure wether to accept but then on realisation that I could add it to my insurance for less than it would be to fill it up I jumped at the chance. plan is to throw a new battery at it and run it through an MOT. then the fun can begin. I was thinking a polish (make it significantly less pink), nice set of wheels and a healthy drop. I need some of you guys great knowledge to find a set of cheap and effective lowering sticks. and a heap of inspiration. so let me start not this!

now... no-body shoot me for being blasphemous or owt. but has anyone chopped up these springs before? i cant see the fronts being much of an issue but when it comes to the back they look like this... ... i can see a problem here as it looks as if if i chop either end off they will in no way sit. but id be happy to be proved wrong! thanks

You could chop the rears, but they'll never sit properly afterwards. There are loads of cheap spring kits about for these, I'd not even be considering chopping them.

they wont sit right as there is two bits that the ends sit over to keep them in place, if your after a big drop you can use corsa rear springs to go right down but the ride will be pants. springs for the mk3 are cheap 2nd hand tho

a bit of an update with this one, it's going to be long so bear with me. First off i got it home and found it had dissolved both of it's rear arches which needed replacing. that was a quick job and isnt very fun so didnt get any photos of that. After the t cut was bought i decided to set aside a good full day to give the new cat-ASTRA-phe the loving it doesnt deserve. i took it down to the pressure washer and gave it 3 goings over, just to get all the curse word off it. now the fun began with polishing. i decided to do the hard work and put in all the elbow grease and tcut. i'll let the photos do the talking. before After while i was polishing i got help from a house mate to linseed all the black plastic so they were looking as good as the paint. then i got a bargain of new tyres, sadly they were attached to ASBO rims. and it was set to use. and use it we did! less than a month after picking it up me and 2 good friends took it over for a Euro tour. on the whole 2000+ mile trip the car only chewed through 1 fan belt and didnt use a drop of oil or water. not bad for a 20 odd year old car. i think this one is a keeper.

the old 8v engines in these are indestructible, ran one for 6 weeks with a knackard head gasket and it still didnt let me down. if your not busy this weekend the voba anual rally is at billing in northampton this weekend so will be plenty mk3 down there

funnily enough my old neighbour had a 1.4 one of these with a knackered headgasket. as long as it was topped up with water regularly it kept going for ages.
oh and that there is proof what a good polish and t cut can do. great improvement.
