Thinking of buying an Audi S4 to replace my ageing Legacy.
I have a specific car in mind, but it has quite high mileage (181k).
Any tips on what to look for / avoid?

I had a W reg (B3?)) S4 Avant with the 2.8 V6 twin turbo. Economy as you would expect was pretty bad <20mpg around town and 30mpg if you took it really easy on a run. But the power and handling were brilliant, especially in a reasonably stock looking body surprised quite a few performance cars. Running costs are high, cost £600 for an alternator as most of the front of the car had to come apart, there is no room in the engine bay. Mine had 100K and was still very solid, in terms of general feel. Check out www.rs246.com/ lots of info. Mark

W reg would have been a B5 - first A4 shape. Solid car with 2.7 twin turbos as you say and a lot of fun. A lot of potential and a lot of costs too. Find a local indie to help keep costs down, but he wont be able to help you with the fuel bill. Insurance is high too as Audi S and RS are the most nicked cars in the UK at the moment.
Really nice cars though - i have my eye on a S4 at the moment, its the 4.2V8 though !!

But the B7 S4 had the same great soounding noise. just less bhp. and mpg isn't that bad. 26/7 on a run. but leathering, your talking about 6!

Just hope I'm not looking at an unsellable moneypit if I want to move it on. Don't remind me, sold mine for half what I paid (and I'd replaced the alternator and 4 tyres) after 18 months I did buy just before the recession hit though.

That blue car looks lovely, even the Mrs said so!!
Got more info on the car: Its a T reg S4 saloon (so B5?) 181,000 miles in navy blue, recent tyres, tow bar, leather seats (standard fit I guess?) Its not been used in a while, but according to DVLA the vehicle status is "SORN not due" I guess that means it still has some tax on it. Not sure about MOT.
For me the insurance is only about £100 more than my family spec legacy estate, so its not too bad.
I've also just been to see a very nice A8 2.7 quattro with half the mileage for the same money so I am undecided whether to go for a nice bit of luxury or a sporty saloon.
I've had my Leggy for over 7 years now and have got a few long holiday trips to do this year so wanted something newer and a bit more spacious. I do need a tow bar occasionally, but can obviously get one for the A8.
It seems the S4s hold their money a bit better, but don't have the luxury car feel.
Help - I can't decide which to buy.
