I had a phone call today from a chap who needed an air hose for his truck....as it was 3.30 on a Friday afternoon I was a bit reluctant to get too involved cos I wanted to go home....man, I'm glad I waited for him to show up, because the truck that he had was this..... It's a ZIL nuclear decontamination vehicle....4 or 6 wheel drive, a 3 ton water bowser and cannon on the back, 6 litre V8 that runs on petrol, paraffin, or anything else you care to chuck in it and the ability to inflate or deflate the tyres from the cab via the onboard compressor.... The air hose that had burst was to one of the wheels- when the hose was removed, all the tyres deflated (that's why it has flat tyres in the pics) The chap was saying that Severn Trent Water imported loads of them in the 80s, but them sold them when they realised they they won't run on diesel! I love this thing sooooooooooo much, I nearly peed myself when the guy told me it was for sale for two and a half Grand! WTF? thats a bargain! shop.suspensionofdisbelief.co.uk/unusual-items/russian-zil-131-nuclear-decontamination-vehicleOh yeah, it's only done 2600 KMs! yes, 2600! Love it!

They look like good value on a size for money ratio! There was a pink one about in Clay Cross for a few years - it may have had a cracked block What you need is to be friends with someone who syphons fuel out when people put the wrong stuff in - they should run on that mix - actually if anybody has any cross fuel mix kicking about would like to try it in our TVO Fergie tractor;)

^ Not convinced it is actually. He claims it can be registered as a tractor, which it isn't. It may be possible to register it as plant however.
Couldn't see any mention of year of manufacture, if it's pre 1973 it's tax exempt as for a car and if it's pre 1960 then it's MOT exempt on age- both provided it isn't used commercially. That said, if you did have to use it commercially no-one is that likely to ask about it... I suspect it's post 1960 though.

Got intriged into what a tractor actually is under UK law and it might actually be one - its not carrying a load except for "excepted articles" Road Traffic Act 1988
Meaning of “motor vehicle” and other expressions relating to vehicles
(1) In this Act—
“heavy locomotive” means a mechanically propelled vehicle which is not constructed itself to carry a load other than any of the excepted articles and the weight of which unladen exceeds 11690 kilograms, “heavy motor car” means a mechanically propelled vehicle, not being a motor car, which is constructed itself to carry a load or passengers and the weight of which unladen exceeds 2540 kilograms, “invalid carriage” means a mechanically propelled vehicle the weight of which unladen does not exceed 254 kilograms and which is specially designed and constructed, and not merely adapted, for the use of a person suffering from some physical defect or disability and is used solely by such a person, “light locomotive” means a mechanically propelled vehicle which is not constructed itself to carry a load other than any of the excepted articles and the weight of which unladen does not exceed 11690 kilograms but does exceed 7370 kilograms, “motor car” means a mechanically propelled vehicle, not being a motor cycle or an invalid carriage, which is constructed itself to carry a load or passengers and the weight of which unladen—
(a) if it is constructed solely for the carriage of passengers and their effects, is adapted to carry not more than seven passengers exclusive of the driver and is fitted with tyres of such type as may be specified in regulations made by the Secretary of State, does not exceed 3050 kilograms, (b) if it is constructed or adapted for use for the conveyance of goods or burden of any description, does not exceed 3050 kilograms, or 3500 kilograms if the vehicle carries a container or containers for holding for the purposes of its propulsion any fuel which is wholly gaseous at 17.5 degrees Celsius under a pressure of 1.013 bar or plant and materials for producing such fuel,
(c) does not exceed 2540 kilograms in a case not falling within sub-paragraph (a) or (b) above,
“motor cycle” means a mechanically propelled vehicle, not being an invalid carriage, with less than four wheels and the weight of which unladen does not exceed 410 kilograms, “motor tractor” means a mechanically propelled vehicle which is not constructed itself to carry a load, other than the excepted articles, and the weight of which unladen does not exceed 7370 kilograms, “motor vehicle” means, subject to section 20 of the [1970 c. 44.] Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons Act 1970 (which makes special provision about invalid carriages, within the meaning of that Act), a mechanically propelled vehicle intended or adapted for use on roads, and “trailer” means a vehicle drawn by a motor vehicle.
(2) In subsection (1) above “excepted articles” means any of the following: water, fuel, accumulators and other equipment used for the purpose of propulsion, loose tools and loose equipment

It's got a girt big water tank on the back- which I'd call capable of carrying a load.
I suppose it might be possible to register it as a locomotive (i.e. a heavy haulage tractor, see Scammell Constructor amongst many others) if you can succesfully claim that it's removeable ballast, or swap the tank for a more traditional ballast box.

If you kook in the 'excepted articles', it lists water, so would still classify. It must only have a driver's seat though, the passenger would class as a load.

Whatever it's classed as, it's still fappin' awesome!
The pink one is also in the same village- it was in a U2 video years ago, and the guy wants to paint it a different colour, but can't as it would devalue it (apparantly!)

ZOMG! I'd love that.
In a not totally unrelated aside, my brother-in-law has flown out to spend a long weekend sightseeing in Chernobyl (yes, really...) this morning, and I've asked him to snap as many old wagons as he has time to. You'll get 'em here first.....

Speaking of nuklear and russian and trucks... Has anyone ever thought about turning a Topol M intercontinental rocket carrier into a camper? The launch tube would make a great living room. Think about a perspex tip... Errect it and have the best panoramic view from your personal look-out - everywhere ;D Ah well... The fuel bill might kill that plan... ;D

That would make a quality bowser for a dirt banger track And for the encore, after a race it could clear all the cars in a single lap, collecting non-runners on the front bumper, and a train of the stranded ones chained together on the back ;D

I think that water is only an excepted article if used for propulsion, ie in a steam powered vehicle.
Massively cool truck though ;D
