I was looking at a photo of the Sunny Citrus Commer van the other day, and have started to come round to the idea of giving the Lambretta sidepanels a temporary new paint job, in a similar faded style, ideally with some old looking logo on it. Any ideas or shortcuts on getting this effect? My guesses would be to prep and paint as normal, then flat paint off, signwrite and flat off some more? I'm not planning a rusty look, more a faded, sunbleached look (which is actually genuine on Sunny Citrus!) Here's the van which gave me ideas: More info on the Commer below; an extremely cool van... 66.129.69.181/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2628&whichpage=1

Fake patina is like sticking tea leaves you to your face and calling it a beard.

i agree with foxy on this, fake patina never looks as good as the real thing, thats why most go for the rusty patina because its more likely to look right, cool idea though post some pics if you do it would love to have a look

I heard of people putting a bit if talc powder in the paint and also spraying the car with coke (cola, not nose dust), idea being the acid eats into the top layer of paint. Have seen some good results.

Slacker - cheers for the offer! If you were nearer, I'd pop round with the panels for a chat. Not keen on posting them though, and want to play with paint and fatigue effects myself to see what happens. Cairy - sounds interesting. I assume the coke would need to be coated on while the paint is still tacky. I'm tempted to get an old car bonnet to have a play around with some ideas....

I did some stencils once, I waited till the paint was dry and then wiped it with a rag with some petrol in it. This takes off most of the paint again and gives an uneven finish. result.... You could also try painting over a dirty/greasy surface, that way some of the paint washes off after a while.

Have seen some good results. If you're going the Coke route, don't do it in the summer, or you'll end up with a layer of wasps all over the paint. That said, 'Wasp-Look' could be the next big thing.........

its not bad to make it look reasonble
if its a whole new paint job decide what colour you want to see on worn spots , so lets say a browny rust colour , once prepped lash plenty of this brown onto the door tops and edges where you plan to see it , maybe a bit of grey prime in places too , really lash it on so its rough and splattered looking
then on the with the topcoat of your choice , purposley go light on the area where you want it to look worn away
once dry go at it with wet n dry until the under laying colours show up , then hit it with a scotch pad , you can use them cut round and stuck on a da sander
for added effect you can tint the top coat and have a slightly out of match panel , or some misted in touch ins on the arch or something
just have a really good look at a proper worn car and make sure you make the worn areas in the right places

Wasp look... love it! Cheers for all the ideas, will try and get hold of a panel from an old scrapper locally and have a play. Looking forward to seeing what happens!
