Anything small and RWD and drop in the 2.3 Volvo turbo lump, you would have about 700 quid to spend I reckon, Volvos go for about 500 and would weigh in for a couple of hundred quid with no engine and box in.
Could buy a Jag for a grand, bit heavy though and mostly autos.
RWD is so much more fun then FWD and i cant think of another way to get decent power cheap these days.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

Just buy a £500 Saxo VTS and use the other £500 for actually paying for track days. You'll have just as much fun in one of them as anything IMO. If you put it through a load of tyres you can then just buy a £200 AX/106/saxo and swap everything over in a weekend.
Don't do what most people do - Spend every penny they have on building an "awesome" track car, and then not be able to afford to take it out!
Stuff like a Rallye gearbox will cost £300+ and there's no guarantee it'll be any good. In fact from experience, it probably won't! Stick with cheap replacement bits that you don't need to worry about abusing.
A gearbox off a 1.1 106 will be in better condition to start with, cost £35 and you'll have just as much fun with it, even if you lose half a second per lap or whatever.

As Cobblers said it's all well and good having an "awesome track slag" but if it never seen the track what's the point, plus you'll have just as much fun in something standard. You don't need a huge power weapon.
I've got a mate who does a few track days, he uses a Rover 25 1.4 16v which he bought as a write off, it's got Gaz coilovers and some T1R's. It goes well, cost peanuts to run and surprises a few things to boot. The whole car owes him circa £600.
For me personally I'd get a £500-600 6 cylinder BMW 3/5 series or Omega V6. They handle well, have nice predictable handling and take a beating. Weld the diff (if no LSD fitted), chop the springs, head to your nearest track/drift day. In recent times I've picked up a spec'd 535 for £500 and a standard good condition 2.5 Omega for £600, great fun!
If your question is purely hypothetical my answer is: E30 with a Volvo redblock turbo engine. ;D

My stock answer is normally an E30, but E36s are incredible value for money right now. For £1000 you could get a battered but good mechanically 328i and have enough change for £180 ebay coilovers.
That said my daily E30 318is was an incredible track car, I only paid £350 for it and I beat it for four years on many many track days before I sold it on. Extremely reliable and not unreasonable 30mpg however I drove it.

You can get a decent mx5 on coilies for a grand. Else I'd say e36 of some persuasion.
A 944 would be great, but how much do brake pads/discs and tyres cost? You can get 4 toyos and set of discs and pads for an mx5 for about 300 quid.

rent-a-car philosophy the less you care about the car the quicker it becomes turbo rovers are cheap now, so are fiat coupe turbo's (250bhp-ish) normally 'cos no-one wants to do a cambelt on them! have some pictures to liven things up! also all the generic saxo/bmw/mx5 answers are valid, they are the generic traacky toys for a reason, cheap, quickish, its just nice to see some randomness blatting round

MX5 is the only real answer here. ^^ he speaks the truth. Grab a tatty looking one for under 500, spend the rest on the next s/h turbo kit that gets sold!! :-)

Renault Avantime?
Seriously though, as per micrat's answer above it's all about getting something different and interesting, often the slow and bad handling cars are the most fun! Remember, you're not actually racing anyone else, just enjoying yourself.

i would go with a fiat coupe 20vt, run it till teh cambelt snaps, or a fiat bravo hgt, strip and race it, or a multipla (thinking of you here emdee) jtd, remap, strip it, coilover it, and surprise alot of people, or buy a generic saxo vts and save the other £500 for when you kill it, and then buy another one

Get a 2nd Gen 1.3i Starlet (Make sure it the Soleil)
100 bhp. When Stripped weighs circa 800Kgs
Bullet proof engine and box. You could probably pick one up for £200 w/o MOT
Some Suspension / Tires / Buckets £300
BOOM - Good to go and crucially - if you stack it or manage to blow the engine just unbolt the bits you put on and start again.
As has been said a lot about - if you are racing something (be it track day or enduro rally etc etc) and you are afraid of damaging it you wont have enough fun.

How fast do you want to go and do you scare easily?
Rover turbo - safe fast option MR2 Turbo - interesting fast option
I had a 106 and Saxo previous there quick through the bends but then I wouldn't buy another I would save a little more and go for a 172 its a much nicer allrounder or if you are looking to play with spanners a 206 GTI

You want an e36 compact ....... Stip it out and have fun. If it blows up put a 2.8/M3 lump in over a weekend. Lot's of racing parts available for them thanks to the Compact Cup. Or as Cobblers says, something like a VTS and be able to repair it with gaffer tape/change found down the back of your sofa.
