At last, I've gone out and bought something. And (in somewhat of a departure for me, given my love of all things Gallic and oddball) it's German, solid and stable. After wheeling round in the Xantia for much more time than I ever expected it to last (11,000 miles in 12 months for a car that cost £200 to save from the weighbridge) the amount of problems it had accumulated (knocking small ends, water loss, oil leaks, breathing engine, knackered spheres) just became too much to have any real trust left in it. I'd looked at all manner of crusty tat to replace it but either I was too slow off the mark in viewing them or they really didn't fire any sort of enthusiasm. So when ^^this^^ cropped up on this here forum for £500 last week I was more or less smitten on sight. Something I'd always fancied but (as is my wont) I'd always managed to somehow talk myself out of buying. Not this time. Daddy Damaged and I trekked over to Northamptonshire yesterday morning, did the deal and hot-footed it back here by 2pm. It is a LOVELY old bus. Feels very much a child of the 80's when you're at the helm which is understandable as it's a mild facelift of a design that first saw the light of day back in 1985. The 136bhp 2-litre 16v M111 engine isn't a ball of fire (especially when, as in this case, it's coupled to a switchable four-speed slushbox) given that it's got a fair weight to pull around, but once you're rollin', you're rollin'. The interior is magificently comfortable, if not that practical for a bloke who comes home from work filthy....a decent seat cover and some over-overmats will sort that out. I dodged the showers this morning to rip the stereo out of the Xantia and install it in the Benz. Aux-In means I can hide my iPod in the centre console and fill that swarthy leather-clad cabin with my usual diet of eclectic musical detritus to my heart's content. I've a few odd jobs to attend to, the bootlid lets the rest of the car down as it's had a whack on the top and there's all manner of grot coming through above the number-plate light. There are plenty on Evilbay though, so I'll hold out for a black one. The wheels are off a later car and don't really suit it, but I've already won a set of eight-hole OEM rims on Ebay this morning (for a whopping £34.....LOL) which will go on it once I've picked them up, given them a refurb and done a bit of tyre-swapping. Will update this as and when anything interesting happens. No big plans other than to enjoy being a wafty old fat bas**rd for the summer. Brian

Brian finally goes and does it.....after ?how long? posting random 'want' cars up on Facebook I return home to find not only Ben back behind the wheel of something cool, but you too. Good work fella. ;D
I must say I didn't see this coming, but I'm so very glad you've gone for something you'll be able to enjoy without the idiosyncrasies of your usual fare. It's certainly got a presence about it. A proper 'Damaged Barge'. Best colour too...
Just like Bens thread, bookmarked and I look forward to seeing it in the flesh as well as reading the updates about it.
Enjoy amigo!

I had exactly the same question as above going through my mind!
Nice purchase though, and I bet if you break out the autoglym and some very fine polishing rags, that paint will come up a treat! (not that I can imagine you putting too much effort into detailing a car - bit like me really!)
Piccy of the oem wheels?

Major fail on my part this morning. I arrive at work at 5.45am, switch everything off, get out, lock it up and walk away from the car. One last backwards glance before I go through the door and I notice that the left-hand sidelight's still on. 'Funny' I think 'I could have sworn I'd turned everything off'. So back I go, open the door thinking 'I must have left the left-hand indicator on and activated the parking light'. Nope. So I switch on the ignition and try the lights, everything works, switch 'em off again, get out, walk round the front, and still the left-hand sidelight's glaring at me. Bumhats. By this time it's almost 6am and I've got a busy day. So 'bo**ocks' thinks I, pull the bonnet, and set about locating the fusebox thinking I'd just pull the fuse for the lights and sort it out later. At which point one of my Polish co-workers comes out, and his eyes light up. "My dad's got one of these back home. Diesel it is, f***ing brilliant car, runs on anything" "Does the light switch work?" I ask him. So he looks in the car, and collapses laughing, pointing out that I'd actually switched the light switch fully anti-clockwise, not realising that the leftward two positions are for either right or left parking lights. Clicking the swich back to vertical switched everything off. Bloody Germans. ;D Moral of this tale.....READ THE F***ING MANUAL. ;D And if the fuel gauge is accurate, I've done 122 miles on half the fuel I put in on Saturday, which equates to 34-35mpg. Ker-ching. ;D

That's a lovely looking W124, and a bargain price! I seriously want one of these... I'm considering one to replace the Golf. Looking forward to seeing it on the new wheels.

To be honest I quite like the notion of keeping it looking at least as nice as it did when I first laid eyes on it. New rims are like these, only in slightly better nick. The ones I've bought have two almost-new Avons on, which was the main reason for buying them....but I reckon once they're refurbed/polished they'll look great.

New Old Rimmage Alert: Picked these up from Cirencester early this morning. Not AMG or Lorinser rims, just good ol' OEM Merc. AMG's are fine on AMG's. Fitting huge rims to this would be like fitting a Cosworth whaletail on a 1600 Sierra. Not gonna happen. No kerbing, just a bit of paint lift. Two tyres are borked, but the other two are near-new. To say I was happy I'd splurged a whopping £34 on these would be something of an understatement. ;D Hopefully the weather will be kind enough at the weekend for me to strip/repaint them. Have notched up 230 miles now, and the fuel light STILL hasn't come on (it was on when I put £40-worth...or six-and-a-bit gallons...in the tank last Saturday). 35mpg makes me even more of a happy bunny. It's taken some getting used to, to be honest. I just don't get how something that cost about the same as you'd pay for a crusty old Vectra or Mondeo can make you feel so special when you drive it. No need to shout, no need to scream....just stick it in 'D', wind it up to 65-70, engage 'Cruise', sit back and relax. Astonishing.

450 miles notched up, and nothing to report.
Starts first time every time, hasn't thrown up any untoward rattles, bangs, clunks or squeaks and is as good on petrol as the Xantia was.
It handles well (once you've got used to the weight of the thing), the brakes are incredible, it's lovely and warm on cold mornings despite having a temperamental fan blower switch (a cheap fix, apparently)....in fact it's just an incredibly agreeable thing to drive after a hard day at work.
It still doesn't feel 'me' though. Perhaps it's just that I've spent so long driving around in decrepit French crates that I've gotten used to not giving a flying one about them. And at the minute I am kinda missing that. The Benz is one incredibly well thought out and put together car. But it does seem to me to be missing that one thing that probably seems daft to many but has always been important to me. A soul.
Time will tell, I'll bash on with getting the new wheels refreshed this weekend and once payday arrives I'll have them rubbered up and balanced and bosh a new back box on.

It's not dead yet, it's still on the drive for another week or so....it still starts first time every time, even if it now sounds like someone rolling a dustbin full of spanners down a cobbled street!! It did me proud.

Another 'nothing to report' post, but seeing as I've done nothing to it apart from shovel fuel in and drive it, that's a good thing. 700 miles in three weeks has thrown up absolutely no nasty surprises whatsoever. And now I'm really beginning to warm to this car's considerable charms. I don't think I've ever owned anything that felt quite so special from behind the wheel. There's just such a grace and fluidity about it when you're wafting, but if you mash the loud pedal from about 40-50mph it picks its skirts up with some considerable force considering it's only got 136bhp to lug all that weight along, before you know it you're travelling at rather more than the speed limit. The book says 133mph top whack and I've no reason to doubt it...... Wheels are half-done, I was going to finish them today but I have the Hangover From Hell. The intention is to use the blue/chrome M-B centre caps from the wheels that are on it now in the 8-hole alloys. If they look gash I'll order a new set of chrome ones off Evilbay. Am hoping to get them (and a new back box) on next weekend, when I'll take some more pics. Which means washing/polishing it as it's absolutely hanging at the minute......
