Okay, not much Retro, but I know there are some very astute people on here so I'm asking a few questions. It is a 2002 bike, 36K and up until yesterday when the battery died was running fine (its not mine but my boy's....). We changed the battery and started it, all hunky dory. Come this morning, he sets off to work and within a mile it just died. I pulled the tank off and rigged an emergency supply, checked the spark (now luverly) but it has refused steadfastly to work. Trying easy-start got an almighty backfire through the exhaust but nowt else. Carb seems to be OK, I'm now at a loss. HELP, anyone? ?

Got spark, got fuel, hows compression? These badboys like rebuilding often and at 36k it's doing well for a race bred smoker. Need to sign up but try here too retrobikes.proboards.com/index.cgi

Compression check it I'd say.

possible rings gone. compression check is definitely the way forward. if carb and spark are fine then its probably a top end fault. they are known for munching through pistons

Has it had mains and seals lately? These used to be reknown for doing them once the rider passed their test - first trip down the motorway and they get hot enough to melt the cages in the bearings. Picked up a few from the hard shoulder..... Oddly enough given good quality oil and proper warming up before being ragged silly other than the bearings they last surprisingly well.

Cheers for the advice lads, I found the reason today; 10mm of the top of the piston has gone AWOL (which is probably why the plug gap was so small!) and taken the bore with it. Oh well, at least I'm not paying £200 for a new piston and barrel! (I've just gotta fit it!)

While its apart check for any alloy remains under the crank, chances are it exitted via the exhaust port but you wouldn't want any stray bits floating about when you fire it up again. Thats a wierd way to fail though - had it been eaten away by pre-ignition?

Friend of mine had one. The reed valve started to fail, the top end temperatures got very high quickly as he was opening it up more to get the same speed.
Sorry to hear it was somewhat catastrophic...
