Anyone remember this event? It happened in the East Midlands area. It was held to find the UK's fastest 0-60mph accelerating road legal car. Leading up the event, the organisers only offered vague details of the location, as they didn't want to attract unwanted interest from the boys in blue. That said, media interest was generated & it was broadcast on Men & Motors & if I remember correctly, also made it into at least one magazine. I think the only details given out initially where for all the cars to meet somewhere around J24-ish of the M1. They would then convoy to a secret location, which at the very last minute was changed (maybe the boys in blue had a tip off) It all eventually happened on the road next to MFN between Shipley & Eastwood. Many years ago, I did see the TV program on Men & Motors. Been searching You Tube & google including images, but can't find anything. The quickest car on the day was the original Dialynx Sport quattro with a 2.2-ish 0-60 followed closely by the famous Red Victor which around 1997 was running a big block for the first time & was a 9sec 1/4 mile car. There was also the usual expected mix of westfields & other exotica competing These pics were not taken on the day in question

OK, this could take a while, I reckon it was 02/03........ certainly a while ago. And it wasn't illegal though it certainly did have that air about it. It was supposed to have been held at Bruntingthorpe but the organisers booked it for a photoshoot, when Bruntingthorpe found out about the event they more than trippled the price. Rightly so because of H&S and services that would have needed to have been provided. So as you say it was held on a privately owned road next to MFN - a club owned by Showaddywaddies drummer which acronymn stood for Middle of Fcking Nowhere. You can see where this is going.
The TV show followed the build up and prep of Andy in Red Victor, Sue Jackson in her Street Eliminator Corvette, John Sleath with his Audi Coupe, a fella with a bog stock Honda S2000 and a fella whose name escapes me who used to write for Street Machine. He had a quick late model Camaro but ended up borrowing a Westfield or some kind of Kit car for the event. Can't quite remember.
The venue was kept a secret essentially because the organisers knew if the competitors knew where it was they wouldn't turn-up. It was a bit of a joke and unfortunately for tv purposes I couldn't take the curse word as much as I would have liked. I remember going to the 'track' the day before and it being covered in cow curse word. We used some of that in the show but most of that had to be cut.
Needless to say the actual racing was pretty poor due to the unprepped track, the undulations and curves. Sue Jackson took some persuading to run at all, Andy Frost didn't mind but started off in 2nd gear. There was a lot of bitchiness between the competitors as well, mostly caused by Dialynx. They argued most of the top cars there were'nt street legal because of their tyres yet there car didn't have an onboard battery and had to be auxiliary started.
As you say the Dialynx car was quickest, can't remember the other results. Other competitors included Mick Rogers Cortina, Wilkes' Viva (my favourite quote in the show when a hose blew off quite spectularly "all I need is a flat blade screwdriver"), the twin engined golf, a quick yellow nova, a blue Zephyr (?) that had come up from Sth London...
My favourite memory of the day was shortly after Sue Jackson completing her burnout and just about to run a couple of ramblers walked over the brow of the hill...
I have a copy of the show but I can't put it online due to copyright. The show was commissioned by Sky I think who owned M&M at the time which was then taken over by ITV..
Anything else I can think of I'll post up..

fannywhacker---- Thanks for sharing that very interesting story. It's all coming back to me now.
Must admit, when I typed "illegal", I wasn't entirely sure that it was the right description.
Whilst appreciating your statement regarding copyright, as Autofive asked, what was the program called? One would imagine, someone in the world recorded it from TV onto VHS & later posted it online when You Tube appeared (as happens with countless TV programs etc etc)

Wasnt it literally called britains fastest road legal cars or some derivation of such? Remember watching it years ago. Loved the swb quattro.

It was imaginatively titled - 0-60 Challenge. I'll try and dig out my copy. It's on DigiBeta so might take me a while to digitise it.

Custom Car did. And Kev Elliot also devoted his intro column to it...... with not especially kind words. The organiser said Kev was to be a scrutineer etc (on camera) and gave the impression that Kev was quite involved. Luckily we we're still editing the show by the time the mag came out and after reading Kev's thoughts on it I realised this wasn't to be the case. I phoned Kev up and he said he in no way wanted to be associated with the event. Understandable but it meant a bit of recutting.
It wasn't Rich Nicholls who I was thinking of...... he was a large guy with a late model black camaro. I've a feeling he was a banker/worked in the city or something and wrote some of the RWYB or Street Eliminator reviews?

Just found this it's not the event we are referring to here but it is the same organiser - Mark Podmore. I guess he has done other events along a similar theme.
Not sure what it has to do with 5th Gear?
