Thanks to the brown forum I've discovered Fuelly. Most of the stuff on there isn't retro, but there's no reason you can't add your own car to the list. Useful bit of insta-maths to figure out your mpgs and even cost if you want to get down to the nitty gritty. It appeals to me, here's what it tells me about my two. Click Here for more infoYou can even get a smaller banner still to put in your signature and it automatically updates.

I keep a little book in the car. Every time I fuel up I put the receipt in the book and when I get home, after I've done all my driving about, I fill in the mileage. Once you get in the habit you don't really notice the extra minute or two it takes to write everything down. Probably even quicker if you use a phone or something too.

I generally keep track in my head and notice if the MPG's dropping to a point i need to get it checked out.
The Civic is usually really easy as it does about 10 miles/L, So easy to work out she's doing around 45mpg. Same for the Fiesta.

I use it, quick photo of the odometer and the pump saying litres and price, put the figures in and job done. Though using my car to commute 3 miles is returning approx 27mpg. It makes me cry.

I kept track for a year for my Kangoo, just wrote the mileage down on the receipt when I bought fuel and totted it all up every few months on a spreadsheet. I averaged 54 to the gallon over 9000 miles, with a best of 74 and a worst of 35 ;D

I use an app on my iPhone called RoadTrip, I also log all my other car expenses into it. Works well for me.

I also use a spreadsheet to keep track of how many miles I do, how many litres are put into the car etc. On the VW Fox I used to drive I have averaged about 44mpg over 3,445 miles although I did have one drive out where I managed to average 22.2mpg over 120miles, this is with a standard 1.2 engine, poor thing was being driven a bit hard that day but I did manage to prove the spec wrong when it said the top speed is 92mph, the top speed of a VW Fox 1.2 is actually over 100mph Also checked it in a second VW Fox with GPS and that said the same thing

I've never understood this fixation with tracking it? The car runs out of petrol and I put more in. What is the appeal to knowing this information?

Because if your driving doesn't change and the roads don't change, the specification fo the car doesn't change and the weather doesn't change......and you suddenly drop from 35mpg to 15mph, I'd like to know about it!

I tend to keep track of mine just out of interest really. I find it helps my economy, because I'm keen to get a decent figure when I get the numbers at the end of the tank-full. It does take me a while to get the figures though in the Passat, a 70+ liter tank and minimum of 47mpg has meant I'm only visiting the pumps about once a month while I'm at uni. I just find it interesting to know how much it's using. Plus knowing helps cost things up, so if I fancy a random road-trip somewhere, I actually know how much it's going to cost me in fuel, rather than just going "erm.. probably be about £x"
Plus like Garry says, it gives you a sign if something's wrong, again, potentially saving you money.
I don't do the maths for every tank, I just know that as long as I tick over to 740 miles before visiting the pumps again then I've managed at least 47mpg, any more's a bonus.

problem is most of these require a full fill up and most people don't

You can do partial fill up, there is an option for that when you input the information.

Seen this website before but this thread has only just promted me to join up.
Since the first day i ever drove i have tripped my miles when i fill up - it's in my nature to know facts and figures especially where money is involved (sad i know).
Plus as of last week i have got my passat on the road which means my fuel cost will jump up marginally. The polo did 37mpg during the week (fairly busy commute) and 45mpg+ on a run. Wheras my first £20 in the passat only got me 28mpg last week commuting (although thats the first time it has been on the road for 6 months, and it needs a service).

There's a handy phone version as well, m.fuelly.com so once you've topped up or filled up, you can update the numbers through your phone before you set off again.

I keep a log of mine although it's nowhere near as involved as the Octavia and Toledo before it had trip computers with mpg/speed averages. It makes frightening reading for the Toledo lol down to 17mpg at one point Mine is for work reasons as my mileage is paid so need to keep an eye on it make sure it's not leaving me out of pocket....
