There'S a video of that 928 on youtube; looks like it drives pretty normal like a piston engined car does. Which surprised me, as I was always told it would be impossible to drive on normal roads, due to spool-up time and what not.  I think that's the one: Mmmmh - one exhaust... Maybe it'S another turbine powered 928!? |

They use helicopter engines for cars mostly as they already have a gearbox on them, because they have a legislated limited flight time before being replaced they come up reasonbly cheaply (compared to the new cost anyway) a lot end up powering water pumps as far as i can work out.

Water pumps and electric drive vehicles seem quite suitable. Gas turbines obviously use a huge amount of fuel, but as far as I understand, at peak power their power to fuel consumption ratio is pretty good. It's just when they're ramping up they're relatively inefficient.

Trouble with a gas turbine is the acceleration, hey have a lot of power but wind up is slow..
Specific power (Power/weight) is good and fuel economy can be OK per kWh.
Torque is also low, but gearing can sort that as you will have several tens of thousands of RPM to play with.
Maybe one linked to a genny or a KERS type system might be the way forward?
