But that does in turn make the bumpers brittle, better to peanut butter or linseed oil them and feed the plastic

I've used rustolem on all my plastic bits, no prep, and only needs a coat (the ultimate lazy solution)  |

No he's right, it draws the oils in the plastic back to the surface where they again are destroyed by UV light leaving the plastic dry and as said brittle, much better to put the as much of the missing oils back into the plactic rather than bleed more off  do the heat trick a few times and the plastic starts to crumble jutt as it does after many years in the sun |

cant beat a good plastic primer!!!
i used to paint plastic parts all day long for Honda,nissan and toyota and se not talking
the odd bit more like hundreds a day.
typical civic type r arch prep..
1.blow off with air. clean whole part with ipa/panel wipe and blow it dry.
2wipe it again with ipa/panel wipe and blow dry.
3. blow parts off again and apply a GOOD primer, not to little and defo not too much just a nice coat where part looks wettish.
4. give part a quick coat of primer again just a dusting
5. allow part a few minsto flash off but not dry out.
6. give part a quick flash over with colour building it up so part totally covered.
6.5 allow to flash off but not totally dry out.
7. depending on paint your using clearcoat the parts or if paint dosr not need clear coating let parts dry.
the key to it is all down to making sure its grease/silicone/oil etc free and that each coat of paint is not totally dry so each layer bonds together as one covering!
if its done correctly you will still be able to see the mottley finish making the psrt look as thou its coloured plastic

It's sometimes easier just to paint them, protects the plastic from UV, and it lasts several years even from a rattle can without primer (if you use the vinyl stuff i used instead of acrylic). Before..  After..  Took less than half hour to remove, prep and paint them. Would've taken longer than that to ruin them with a heat gun. No brainer. |
