I am gonna black the bumpers on my Saph and was wondering what would be the best way to do it I have used plastikote plastic paint on smaller plastic parts with no problems, and I have seen a load of special plastic paints but is it really needed? if I key well would normal Halfords primer and satin black do the job? opinions and recomendations please

You really need to use a proper plastic primer - Avoid the cheap stuff or it'll all be coming off in no time. Also, make sure you spend ages cleaning the bumpers first to remove any traces of back to black silicon sprays. Plenty of scrubbing with a stiff brush and washing up liquid, followed by a good jet washing will probably do the trick.
If you just want to paint the bumper black again, just ask at a refinishing supplies place for "Impa bumper paint"
They can mix it in loads of colours, and it's designed exactly for this. It keeps a textured finish but doesn't fade, and it sticks really well and is pretty easy to use. I've used it to paint the doorcards and dashboards on t4 campers, and you'd really not know they had been sprayed. I always get it by the half litre/litre and spray it from a gun, but I reckon most refinishing supply places would be able to put it in aerosols.

Best way to clean anything before painting is to use panel wipe. As for plastic primer I use Octoral plastic primer which is 1k, so you just pour into the gun & blow.

I've used Halfrauds plastic bumper paint on my last 3 motors. I know it's Halfrauds but I was very pleasantly surprised the first time I used it on my old Breadvan. I'd tried everything to get them black as they'd gone grey with age and I just spotted it one day.
I was very aprehensive as it says on the tin that you don't need primer. There's a clear bumper preperation spray which you use on the bumper first, similar to panel wipe. You spray it on and wipe it with a clean rag, then you just paint it. It dries really nice and I used it on my Metro and I painted the bumpers and bodykit on the GTI.
It's probably the best thing I've ever bought from Halfrauds, ever.

Seriously though folks, I've also used the Halfords Plastic Primer witout problem.

All the bumpers I've used it on were textured, if I ever end up doing something smooth, I'd still key it with some fine wet & dry to be on the safe side before using the prep spray and paint.

If you wanted to push the boat out you could sand it flat first, then use a plastic primer.

they look as if they were black plastic already?just faded? best stuff in the world in my opinion is Hilite by concept chemicals, just paint it on and leave it for a hour or so, come back wipe excess off and the bumper is like new, goes for any coloured plastic or rubber it just soaks in and brings them up like new, been using it for years! for instance i had a 1986 shogun here today which has never been touched on the bumpers or plastics etc, they were faded to grey and dirty and discoloured, painted it on and two hours later when the guy came back he thought i had put new bumpers and plastic surrounds on!!

rwdrules, cheers for that, but they are gettin painted, i have used all kinds of things on other cars in the past, from the expensive to the cheap, some last longer than others, but eventually it goes grey and needs doing again, would rather just paint em and have done for a year or so rather than a month or so

Hi FYI if you have faded black plastic bumpers if you blow a hot air paint stripper at it it will bring the oils inthe plastic back to the surface!!
