'Arrow' series Rapiers are indeed very, very groovy.
I have in my head a 'miami-look' one.... Stock metallic colour, polished chrome, rolling on 18in polished rims, low as you like, huuuuge sound sytem. All the windows down, turned up to 11, yo.... ;D

I've never been able to get my head around the arches on the later ones,.. I just can't see a good set of wheels sitting in there...  |

I'd of seen it as PC mag stuff, but its all moddable.

I love these things, not as keen on the arrows ones. but nice to drive. There was a Kustom job done on one in the late '80s. Twas featured in Custard Tart magazine. Looked good but i haven't got any pics of it. The early ones were great with the wind down pillarless windows in it. Here's one i had earlier.........thats not me in it, its my dad. It was the only old car i ever owned that he liked.  |

When I had some Fastbacks (all sold now  ) I had a crazy idea of doing a mid-engined V8 one - cos the side-on proportions are wrong - too much metal between the back of the door and the rear wheel arch - and inspired by the Giocattolo.  Seemed like a good idea at the time  |

Why should you buy one? Well, as far as tthe Arrow series goes - just look at it! Its beautiful! Probably the most elegant mass produced fastback coupe built in the UK. Slender pillar lines, subtle waistline hips, tons of chrome without being OTT. Slick as you like and as tough as a Hillman Hunter estate! 1725cc Holbay lump with the over drive box gives spritely (but not road ravaging) performance, the lumps a good un and can be tuned and looks boss when you do. Theres room in the bay for a smallblock Mopar without cutting anything.
Conventional layout underneath, MacPhearson strut front and a live axle on leaves. Uses Ford 4 lug PCD so good choice of wheels available. Few things look better than a set of Mk2 1600E Rostyles and a couple of inches hacked out of the ride height. Maybe Cosmics.
Forget big inch rims on these.
Very beautiful cars and getting very rare. And they are cheap as chips for what they are. Think of it as a baby Baracuda or something.
They do rust though.
The earlier ones seem to have a bit more of a price premium, look decent as stock or as a period rally / circuit rep. They are a little dumpy looking for a custom / rod look though. So keep it retro look on them. Same basic Hillman running gear with overdrive.
I have driven both types and they are nice riders, fair body roll, but this can be sorted. Well ballanced if rolly-polly.

Not arrow shape but here's a couple of profile drawings I did when I had my Series 3A. Mild chop and Watson paint. It has to be done one day!   Edited to add: Alastair! Too dumpy for a custom!!! The rear deck is a bitshort but chopping would move the roof forward because of the shape of the pillars and would help stretch it out I reckon |

I'd defo have one, i would fit a £50 ford 2.0 twink and 5-speed box to it though.
An 'arrow' one that it, not really interested in the earlier one.

Seth, I just don;t think theres enough space between the front wheel and the door. The door then practically opens into the rear wheel arch. Its a "very British" style of car. I like your top rendering though

My Father had a 1961 SERIES 3A Similar to this :  Quite sucessful in Motorsport Pillarless too and they had 14 wheels as standard, afterwards when Series 4 came out engine was not as powerful (despite being a 100cc extra...I think) and was put on smaller 13 inch wheels. Reason 3A was most successful in Motorsport was fact standard car structure in general was strongest of range ever, thicker engine crank and extra leaves in springs and so on As for later Arrow Version (also having 'Alpine' name in the range) despite having the superb Holbay motor in the H120 version never seemed to be Motorsport entered (always left for the Arrow 'Minx/Hunter' range which WON the London Sydney Marathon in '68) My Father reckons his Series 3A was just about the best car he had evAr. Many (clubs, owners etc) also believe that the 50's 60's 'I, II, III, IIIA (especially this one), IV' range was better built than the later 'ARROW' range.  |
