I heard a rumour that Golf Mk2 lowering springs work fine on a B2 Passat. Is this truth or bunkum? Failing that or whatnot, best way to remove a couple of inches from the ride height...?

they have coils; you could actually just chop them; i am not sure about Golf springs, they might fit, i never tested them , as we need TÃœV over here ..... you could also use Audi 80 B2/B3/B4 front springs, and cut the rear ones.... i might have a set of used H&Rs in the workshop, i need to check, if they are still here .... H&Rs are the best ones available for these cars; this is my Variant with H&Rs and standard shocks : H&R claim to lower about 40mms, but mostly they drop 60mms ....

opinion is divided as to whether cutting them is OK or if they are pigtailed/variable wound. chopping them is fine it they are good to go at that.

Cutting the springs on these is no big deal. If you know what you're doing.

I ran MK2 golf front springs, think u might have to fit them upside down, or I might've used golf top caps to suit

no, they don't share the A platform like b3/4 passats and mk2/3 golfs did. they're the same platform as the same age audis i believe.
you can chop the springs, but from experience, itll ride like curse word unless youre just sat on the bumpstops. if mk2 springs fit, id go for them as the cheap and easy option, as you can get various weights and drops.
you could probably make some coilies fit, i dunno if mk2 ones would go though, its been a while since i played with one of these.

(I know I have them I just think they claim to be "universal") but TBH I CBA with anything which is like hard work on the thing.

I tried mk2 rear coilovers on the rear of the santana and it was riding on the bumpstops at this sort of ride height. So I went with standard mk3 springs for the rear and -40mm mk3 springs on the front. *edit( looking back at the pictures the struts were freakishly long! mk3 coilovers must be shorter than that lol

Edit, c71s, mk2/3 golfs do have freakishly long rear struts. Mk1's and Polo 6n are the same but shorter, so might be worth a look.

www.ukpassats.co.uk/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=22168I used Ibiza/6n polo rear shocks on the back of my old silver one, the spring cup is about 90-100mm lower than the passat ones so instant drop with normal ride, then fitted some corrado vr6 rear springs and it dropped about another 40mm and still rode well. Only down side was that the rear beam would hit the chassis when hit bumps
