I'm looking for ideas for a 18th birthday present for my son. He quite fancies a Driving Experience type event either on a track in something quick or an off road or rally event - there seem to be loads available but how do you know which ones are any good? Anyone done one in the South East that was good or that they would recommend - or any tips for those I should avoid??!! Reading the small print you don't seem to get a lot of time behind the wheel at some of them. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Currently driving a 1972 BMW 1602 as my daily. Don't ask about previous cars - there have been way too many and I stopped counting at 160!

I did the "rally day" (read: hooning a rwd escort round slippy tarmac) at oulton park for my 18th, through motorsportvision & I really enjoyed it.
Had plenty of seat time, and the instructors were really friendly & encouraging.
I've had mates that have gone on the supercar ones & come away disappointed, due to not much time driving & not being able to give it any beans.

Yup supercar ones are curse word - Apparantley they Clio Cup/Porsche 911 one is supposed to be good but you'll come away wanting a Clio more than a Porsche lol.

I got my daughter one for her 14th, learning how to drift in a Impreza. She loved it and the only time the instructor spent driving was 10 mins at the end when he took her for a flat out sideways run around the circuit. Recommended if you can find one close to you.

Couple of years ago drove a DB9 and a Continental GT which was quite good as I would never be able to own such cars.

I've had quite a few of these bought for me - single seater at oulton park, ferrari 360 at three sisters (curse word) and lambo gallardo/ferrari 355 at bruntingthorpe. The 1st two were only ok, as they were constantly slowing you down/ limiting you to 4000rpm. But the day at Bruntingthorpe was really good - if the instructor guy thinks you're safe enough, then they push you faster. 150+mph with the roof down in the lambo was quite an experience! :-)

i've done a couple (thanks to a now ex-girlfriend) and they were both great. first one was hooning around croft circuit in a ginetta. did about 6 laps i think, not loads of driving but good fun and very memorable. then did a rally day which was sliding around in the gravel at the corner of an airstrip in a rally prepped mk2 escort. loads of car time, loads of noise and drifting. so much fun. had a few mates do supercar days and they're generally very strict about car time and use of the loud pedal.
keep asking around i'm sure someone will suggest a good one local to you. they're quite expensive but as i said, very memorable.

Did Silverstone rally day some yeas back, great fun and would recommend. Also been round the local stock car/ banger oval in my old Polo. that was fun too and only £4 or thereabouts.

My missus did the Silverstone rally thing as well and really liked it.
I've done a mixed day of kart, Caterham, single-seater formula type car, sports car etc. Didn't really enjoy that much apart from drifting figure-8s in the Caterhams, far too much hanging about and being tall the formula effort was hopeless for me.

don't know about anyone else but Id rather do the off roading ones than the track ones, failing that the rally is the next option.

My mate won one on ebay for cheap the other week, Ferrari 360 at Silverstone. He said it was awesome and the instructor was encouraging him to go faster! Seems a bit hit and miss though, I've also heard people being to to slow down.

Had an Evo experience and was disappointed. 4 laps up and down a tiny track with a yoof sat next next to me constantly pressing the limiter. The unfortunate thing is the TTS we drove there in was faster! I'd try and sort some go-carting for him and a few mates. Far more enjoyable (and the chance to race Dad perhaps)

If you don't mind travelling to the Midlands, try here - www.motorracinglive.co.uk/You do get a lot of track/driving time for your money, and the Dodgems one is run on the lines of a proper race event.

I did a rally taster day at epic motorsport that my mum got me for my 18th. Was really good fun, even though we were in the little 1.6 saxo's, so i bought my brother and myself one of the night rally experiences they do in the Evo's which is on the 7th of jan. I'd recommend signing up to groupon as thats where we heard about them and you'll get a bargain. The full night rally ended up costing less than a taster session because of it

I did one of these in July, drove a Ariel Atom and a Lamborghini Gallardo followed by a passenger ride with Tom Onslow-Cole in a Focus RS. I think it is about how lucky you are when it comes to the instructor person, went in the Atom first and the guy didn't let me go too fast, but the guy that I was with in the Lambo was brilliant, overtook quite a few cars but cause the track was so short with chicanes round it I ended up getting held up a few times. On the last lap of my Gallardo laps, because the instructor allowed me to go for it I ended up catching up and getting stuck behind an Ariel Atom, Porsche 911 Turbo, Aston Martin DB9 and the Gallardo's bigger brother the Murcielago. Had a great time and was a great 18th birthday present though, would recommend it cause it was a great chance to drive something a bit quicker than my mums VW Fox 1.2 and my Austin A35 when I get it on the road.

done a few over the years and never felt totally satisfied .. rally experience at brands in a mk2 escort and then a mk4 cossie but was over pretty quick, off road experience up in MK i think but very very tame. took an AMG SLS out at merc-benz world at brooklands recently on a press jolly and that was by far the best - they encourage you to be progressive with it (at least the instructor i had did). either that or go karting

tank driving course in the midlands, ok its not for speed merchants, but the place was bang on, got to drive a millitary waggon to start, a self propelled gun, a personel carrier and a bend in the middle steer tracked jobby. staff were second to non, put on a proper "tank day" lunch (potato hash) for not just the entrants but family that came to watch, with afters, very friendly and not stupidly priced either.

I did a skidpan course at Rockingham a few years ago.
It was great fun - a good dozen or more laps of the skidpan course, plenty of sidewaysness, and good instruction. It was 3 people plus the instructor to a car - first up the instructor showed how it should be done, then we each got a good few goes on the track.
It wasn't just a good time, I also picked up some really useful skills that day - I think you can take more away from it than you can from most of the others. I certainly managed to avoid putting my car in a hedge because of the skid experience.
Highly recommended.
EDIT to add that if you do the skidpan one first you'll probably get more out of a rally/fast car session at a later date.
