I need to start turning some of the lights off when taking these kind of shots - too much light inside compared to the darkness outside. The trouble is, there is usually someone working under a car somewhere in the unit when I take them so it might not be wise to just go plunging the place into near darkness in future without letting them know ;D Some shots taken inside, some outside, but all taken at night in the dark. They might not all fit into the criteria, but I can remove those that don't if you want? 'Those' doors: Teenage Dirtbag - about 10 mins after it was 'finished' (if there ever is such a thing?) James (Eightsix) leaving the unit after carrying out some work Maybe not exactly what you were after, but it makes a change from just car shots at garages/lock-ups! JoeTheFish and Tigran hanging out by the 'Authorized Personnel' entrance @ 3.00 in the morning! I know this isn't following the exact criteria, but taken outside the doors....and 3am in the dark, handheld, no flash....I always marvel at how well this shot came out considering there is only one security light in the yard The Fugitive lurks in the shadows Moody night shot (outdoors again, SORRY!) Marks new purchase. Giving it a late night check-over before he drives it back to Ireland. We were still sorting niggles when he was supposed to be on the road in time to catch the ferry... One little worklight on top of the Delica was all that was needed to capture this. I need to start thinking more about lighting when taking shots.... Ryans Micra getting prepped for a repaint. Taken just before midnight, we still had a LONG night ahead of us.... Dans Cuore just before being masked up for its paintjob. The 5 min "I've got some spare paint, lets hit the Cuore" rattle can job made a good undercoat but wasn't up to standard for a finsihed coat, so a proper repaint it was. I jsut had to include this Probably my FAVE night shot of all. Taken around 2am, the car tucked away for the night after a LOOONG weekend working on it.

Great idea for a thread. I like also the pictures with persons, there's definitely more ambience in night pictures. And we all have done some jobs that lasted long into the night or even whole night, some of the pictures above bring back those memories... Motivates me to go do some light-painting. Will post some pictures after I have managed to do that... In the meanwhile, here's one pic shot some time ago when working in my old garage in an old factory.

I've tried infill with light painting but end up overexposing. For example in this pic if it were to be "perfect" there would be some lighting on the side of the MX5. Thing is when I try that I always bleach it. Working on it! Its the right time of year as its dark early (see, there is a plus side to this shoddy winter)

What a great thread; it captures the reality of owning an old car - that it spends most of its time in bits...

if it were to be "perfect" there would be some lighting on the side of the MX5. Thing is when I try that I always bleach it. Working on it! Its the right time of year as its dark early (see, there is a plus side to this shoddy winter) ^^ Yeah ^^ that's what I meant by my earlier comment regarding lighting. Nearly all my photos (in fact, all of them) are 'real'...as in; no extra lighting, no flashes, no light painting- just eau naturelle. This means when I look at them I often think, "Oooh, if only I'd lit that bit" but then it would become a staged picture rather than a genuine snapshot. It's a difficult one, but I certainly think for now I will just continue to shoot natural shots at the unit...it's just a lot easier that way. They might not be perfect, but I like to think they represent the true Area 52. That one of the MX5 has always grated a bit due to being neither in silhouette or illuminated on the side. Oh well....one day I might decide to do an actual 'shoot' at the unit. In the meantime, here are some more shots taken at night...including some that I think capture the atmosphere: A very long weekend of painting cars that saw the spray gun going well into the early hours on Saturday and Sunday. It was about -5 degrees outside. Not far off freezing in the unit either, but we pressed on... Jims bus just after sunset. A lot of the nightime photos seem to make it look a lot lighter than it really was. In this shot, it was actually pretty much pitch black at the time! Kevs two fave things....slots and split rims. Need I say more? 10pm, end of Jan and one of the coldest weekenders ever. Alan warms himself up with some grinder action Burnouts can produce a lot of smoke. Doing them indoors can make you realise just how much smoke! (this was about 15mins after I'd finished the burnout...and the doors were open the whole time!!)

Kinda the same sorta idea, really like this pic. It's just nightime with a worklight illuminating the car whilst i was working on it, thought it looked cool.

Our Thirty: 1989 Mini Thirty by retromotoring, on Flickr (that's ten separate photos combined together, taken in pitch dark using a remote trigger for my flash unit, good way to learn a few new techniques )

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.
