Evening all. I tried doing some searching for this on the forum but didn't find anything, so hear goes: I imagine alot of people on here, like me, rent units for their projects because garages are either too titchy or hard to come by. I rent a unit about 15 miles from my house and, as well as my beemer, it now has all my tools in there. I know the absolute value of all my stuff isn't much, probably totalling ~£3k including the car parts that aren't yet on the car(!), but I'd still like them insured. Question is: how? The landlord won't, and neither will any insurance company i've tried; even if I were to take out a whole house contents policy and tag it on to that NFU made me laugh, as whilst they are the only people to offer me insurance it was for everything but theft Is anyone able to shed any light on the situation? Thanks in anticipation, Matt

Competition Car Insurance used to offer a policy that would cover a car and tools of a pre-agreed value. But I'm not sure about there restrictions on location, a lot of units suffer as they don't have proper addresses, meaning they're harder to identify when it comes to rating them.

I asked this in garage communities a while back - no replies. And guess what? We got done over 3 or 4 weeks back - about £2k of tools gone.
Anyway, an "Insure everything" shop has just opened around the corner from me, so I'll pop in in the morning and see what they say.

speak to a specialist insurer. I know my cars and parts are insured through Peter James, luckily I can keep all my tools at home so never had to ask about that.

Bear with me - I'm waiting for a phone call after a conversation this morning.
If they come up with anything sensible I'll post their details.

I asked this in garage communities a while back - no replies. Insurance Broker here and I never go in there I'm afraid. Then again, this one's got me stumped! A Motor Trade Combined policy is the obvious answer, but obviously no good if you're not in business and it will be subject to minimum premium levels. The likes of Aviva aren't too bad for a little policy covering Road Risks, Public Liability/Servicing Indemnity and some Contents cover though. I'd say Akku's on the right track with an enthusiast's broker like Peter James etc. As long as the unit's secure they shouldn't mind too much whether the risk is next to your house or elsewhere. Will be interested to hear how you get on with that there 'insure everything' shop Pantera. Is that your term or theirs?!

Heh! My term.
By the looks of their shop window claims you'd think they'd insure self made spaceships.
No call as yet tho.

Ironically, a self-made spaceship wouldn't be that hard to place in Lloyd's . . . I'd have a proper look into this myself but I'm currently sat on Garden Leave having handed my notice in at the start of the month. Timing or what?! My soon-to-be previous employers have got a Commercial office in Stoke. Rhymes with Swindon. They might be worth giving a shout but make sure it's the Commercial guys - we know what we're talking about, best I don't get started on the Private Car/Household lot . . . It would be a case of convincing an underwriter to go for it which is what your 'insure everything' guys will be doing at the moment. If the likes of Peter James are already placing a load of tools on their scheme then they'll have more clout with the underwriter when trying to get this query past them.
