Hello, up for sale is my E28 5 series with a few modifications. A few stats before I plough into the bulk of whats been done...
MoT: 26th April 2012
Tax: SORN
Milage: 112,000
Asking £500 for it
Engine:
This car started life with an eta engine producing 125bhp and 177ft/lbs torque, this was essentially the 2.5l M20 engine with a longer stroke to raise the capacity to 2.7l and a low revving cam designed to give lots of low end torque for good fuel economy. Instead of keeping the low end torque, by swapping the head and electronics from an E30, I've increased the power to somewhere in the region of 180+BHP and 190+ft/lbs torque. This is a conservative figure based on what others have gained. I've had the head professionally stripped and rebuilt with a 25 thou skim to raise the compression ratio to 10:1 - thereby increasing the power and economy. I am currently getting figures of around 25-37MPG depending on driving conditions and style. It has however developed a slight fault with the engine management, where it will want to stall when coming off the throttle but will idle fine when left to it - I haven't had time to check over things yet!
Gearbox:
Originally installed was a horrible auto box that really didn't pair well with the new engine as it only allowed the car to rev to 4500RPM because of the previous engine. This was changed for a Getrag 260 (as found in the larger BMWs of this age). At the time it had a new clutch fitted and the cooler lines removed. Again, this needs a bit more fettling, whilst repairing another part of the car I realised that the prop I had been given as part of a manual conversion was in fact wrong and slightly too long. So soon it will need changing for the correct one, although it will drive fine in it's current state.
Interior:
The interior is the lovely 80s brown and beige, with the usual dash cracks (try finding one without!). The carpet has been wet vacuumed but still has the odd mark, it's not the easiest colour to keep clean and 24 years of use can be seen. The seats are from an earlier model as they were replaced earlier this year and it looks (and feels) a lot better for it. I have also fitted a radio from scratch, and it has had wires run front to back and some Alpine speakers installed with adaptors in the front to convert the old 6x4" to 4" for better sound. The head unit is a rather nice Kenwood unit and has a remote control and iPod USB connectivity run into the glovebox.
Other bits:
There's loads been done to this car, too much to list really but the major bits:
- New tyres 500 miles ago, a full set of 4 Uniroyal Rain Experts. Have made the car much better to drive!
- Uprated (haha) paint job; now painted satin black, runs everywhere and really needs a respray but looks better than it when it was beige and had no laquer!
- Front bumper can be taken with the car, however, it's rusty and makes the car look much worse. The rear bumper is rust free, and has been treated with a lot of hammerite. It shouldn't rust.
Major bills:
£200 Head/electrical
£560 Head rebuild
£200 Manual conversion
£150 Rear bumper
£200 Stereo
£260 New tyres
£100 Replacement seats
That's £1670 alone. There's more been spent but it's a list that's too long!!
I've spent more than is logical on this car that, as you'll probably know, will never come back. I'm selling as I wanted something different and a little more economical/sensible/newer.
The paintwork is truly shocking but the interior ain't too bad, it's pretty solid and it goes quite well. I'm sure you could make money breaking it, but I think it's well worth sorting out. Have done a fair few miles in it as a passenger (only ever driven it before the gearbox swap though) and it's quite a nice place to be really.
It's in Wotton Under Edge, Gloucestershire.
