What you know? Apart from the fact there 628 or 635 Manual or auto. What to look for? what goes wrong? Should i expect hideous repair bills, spaceship type running costs and horrendous insurance? or, are they reliable, sip petrol like a vicars wife sips her tea and are insuable for peanuts? Also, pics!!! Google search didnt show up much of any interest. I always fancies one, maybe its time? ;D

They are gorgeous for a start, the 635 has that fantastic engine and they were nicely specced for the time. They do have some common problems, I think the worst being rusty front wings - seems the sharks nose traps a lot of water!! My mate had one when we were 19 or so, at the time it seemed too expensive but I'd deffo have one in my garage if I could. Hers a piccy of a late Highline model - too many have had Alpina rims fiitted, stick with the BBS I say although these look like 850 (and therfore metric) rims. Heres an early one in Bronze ('ave it!)

Nica tarka, although early, with chrome bumpers will always be way cooler in my book. Add chrome arch trims and youre on a winner ;D

Heres mine next to my Monza Not done much with it since I bought it. Its a 1978 635 CSI one of the first years for the 635 csi so it has the dog leg close ratio manual box and it also has an LSD. There are two distinct models pre 82 like mine are based on the E12 five series. Post 82`s are based on the E28 five series and are easier to get parts for, as far as I know there is not much interchangeable. Later ones normally seem to sell for more. Bodieanddoyle is the person who you really need to ask about these though.

I've had two.one was an M6...you could have bought one cheap a year or two back, now they are suddenly worth money, and the other ,which I scrapped was a 628....Duh!!! what a lemon,i bought it because it was advertised as 635 and it was cheap. It had so much rust I didn't even bother driving it once I got it home.AND these cars DO Rust,Especiallty the early ones. They are basically a early 5 series with a fancy body on top, so 2nd hand spares are cheap . The first ones were built by Kharman ,who have never heard of rust proofing or even of the concept of painting under areaes you can't see,so avoid any 6 series with the slightest rust. Don't buy one which runs hot or is rattly unless you want to learn how to remove and repair 6 cylinder BMW heads, the early auto trans are Borg warner type 35's so are cheap to rebuild, not so the maunal versions,if you find a good almost rust free one with a big mileage put a Ford V8 into it! They are not the fastest car so a engine swap makes a big difference .Good looks with lots of grunt!.

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

built by karmann, no woner i like them!! Both my rocco and ghia are karmann built, therefore i know all about rust ;D
So, to recap, if i want an early one, what model/spec is the best bet? 628 or 635, make sure its not rotten, runs ok, and is auto?
Whats high miles for them? Stear clear of hot running and noisy ones. What about electrical problems?
What sort of prices would a decent early one go for?
thanks for the help, i may take the plunge!
Is insurance heavy? I'm 29, nearly 4 years no claims and a clean license (somehow ;D)

Ill have to let something go first, i live in a culdesac with nowhere near enough parking and i have 2 motors on the road as it is ;D I think, someday soon, the rocco will be sold. Not till ive swapped the motor and slammed it so i can have some fun. Then i just need to decide what next. So many cars, so little space I guess it will be a case of what turns up first. A while back there was a black 628 with red interior and chrome arch trims on ebay, bloody lovely. Went for £1200. Pity i had no money at the time.

sorry for being late to this, I'm playing 4page catchup at the mo right, e24's basically three types 1) the first gen. with the convaluted rubber bumper sides (rear only). like this came as a uber rare 630 carburettor or 633i. 630 could have a 4 speed box, but most were auto or 5 speed, 633's were all 5 speed. the 5 speed being the bullet proof getrag split bell housing box, which command £350-500 as they adapt-fit chevy engined kitcars and e-types. later came the 635 with the e12 m535i engine, it could also have a dogleg 'box. something like this 2) next came the facelift with slim chrome bumpers and face lifted front end. like this in 2.8 and 3.5 flavours, 2.8's used to be as expensive to insure as 3.5's. these were based on the e28 platform, but 1" shorter in the wheelbase. steer clear of metric wheels, 415 tyres look great until you have to spend £180 a corner on boots 3) highline. last of them, most had black exterior trim. many had leather recaro's, some being electric. stitched leather everywhere, dash, headlining etc. special molded bumpers signify a highline, also they have smiley/bullseye headlights. they look like this problems; check for rot everywhere, built by karman seems to mean they conracted vw rust disease. fuel tanks rust, but they are the same as e28s (later cars anyway). 70-80% of the car is special to it, don't expect to get anything cheap or easy. fritz bits are the specialists, offering GRP front ends. wings in steel are enough to make a dubai prince weep. thankfully their saloon car origins make things on the underside readily available and not too complicated, axle bushes are the only real specialist operation. late highlines can crack heads and blocks, but only if you are unlucky. if you need anymore info , just ask. I do repairs servicing and spare parts ooh and I have a black 633 first gen at work, needs a new owner....
