Hi Guys
I desperately want an older MX5 something like a 1993 1.6litre. At the moment though insurance prices are throught the roof. I'm 21 will be 22 when I purchase it. I have 3 years no claims, 4 years with direct line but its just so much, around £1500 when my current car an almera is just under a grand. I wanted to know if this car and myself would be elegible for classic insurance?
Another problem as well is that I am a keen cyclist and I want to mount bikes onto the back. I know certain racks can fit over the back but I have seen so many different views about fitting a tow bar to one. I really want to have a tow bar fitted just becuase it is more secure. Any info?
Cheers Guys
Tom

Who's that quote with? You're getting ripped.
For a UK MX5 it's about £350 for me to insure - 23, 4 years NCB. Import is £450 (standard cars).

That was on confused, compare the market etc. I tried footman james but no luck. I was thinking about putting mileage down and making it just social as it will only be a second car.

You could try Carole Nash. I insure my MR2 on a classic policy with them as a 2nd car with limited miles.
Most classic places don't like under 25s but Carole Nash were fine with me!

Also most classic policies don't support NCB's so you could end up shooting yourself in the foot.

I think you'll struggle to get a tow bar on it, the exhaust goes most the way across the back. Plus if your after an earlier one, they are lower stock than the later mk1's so rear ground clearance will be an issue (espec once you've loaded it up). I think your going to have to load it off the boot or something similar.
Insurance wise, if its an import make sure its got an immobiliser as most laces will insist on it (but not for a UK one)

I found them very cheap (relatively) to insure. I'm 21 + 4 years ncb, found quotes around 800 quid.
Is the one you're looking a a import? That will dramatically increase the cost.

You should be able to get it on a classic policy with footman james, I got a quote for an mx5 a couple of years ago and it was pretty cheap. You can still get unlimited miles with them for it too, they don't use or accrue ncb but not having made any claims is taken into consideration. If its going to be a second car you won't fall into the ghetto either

Yeah its seems to be 1500pounds is the cheapest I can get, that's for a UK car as well. I will call footman and carole though see what they have to say. I have seen people putting these strange hitches to the rear mainly on the US, has anybody seen these before.

They were never meant to have towbars on, although they are allowed simply because they came out before the new regulations. The mk2's cannot be fitted with a towbar legally.
I think Ritter made one back in the day but as mentioned earlier, there isn't much right at the back of the car to attach to and there is a back box in the way.
If it's just for the sake of carrying some aluminium bikes around you might be able to get something made up that is strong enough, don't suppose one of those little bootlid roof-racks could be modified?

I have seen people putting these strange hitches to the rear mainly on the US, has anybody seen these before. Are they towbar based? From my days at Halfords (many years ago) I seem to recall 'frauds and Thule making a kit that bolted to a towbar. The problem with that is that you'd need to get a tow ball fitted. As for insurance, have you tried Peter James? So long as the car's over 15 years old it should count as a classic. Footman James allegedly have the same cut off date....except it doesn't seem to work that way for Citroens. My mate SCTSH_ANDY tried to insure his '92 AX GTI through them and was told 'they're not a classic yet, sod off'. Most places should regard an early Roadster \ MX-5 as a classic by now, although I'd avoid the former because it will undoubtedly push your premiums up. Any excuse..... Other than that, your intention to use it as an everyday car will not be helping your premium. My daily car (2006 Citroen C4 HDi) is still £600 a year and I live in a nice bit of Cheshire. The only low premiums I pay are on my toys because they're second (and third) cars used as toys, some with low agreed annual mileages. I'd look at the loading your postcode has (sorry, don't know where you live) and consider running something billgey for your everyday car to get some more NCB built up and using the '5 as a toy. Then with that sorted, perhaps try raising your excess and lowering your annual mileage with a few tolerant brokers \ b0rkers. Other than that, it could just be your age. Insurance on my old rubbish didn't start getting cheap until I reached 25. Some cars are still off limits to my budget - Saabs for example. One mention of those and most providers have a fit.

As for an Ax GTi not being classic, pish! my 92 Ax GTi is on a classic policy with turbo and mods all declared

I've got an early import Eunos and couldn't find anywhere to insure as a classic (tried all my usual ones) so went from from paying £100 for a 2k classic to nearly £600 for an Eunos worth maybe 1k. Ho hum.
I'm 32 and live in decent area, but had an accident 5.5 years ago and no NCB since my classic policies weren't building it up.

I found the specialists really came into their own when it came to insuring my Eunos. Try people Sky Insurance, HIC, Greenlight etc.
These days comparison sites give the worst quotes, you're better off going old skool and picking up the phone.

for me, the cheapest I could get my Eunos insure with was direct line (cheaper than Sky and HIC). That was for unlimited miles on a stock policy. Only thing they wanted was an approved immob.
