My Frontera has a 2.8 litre four cylinder engine. The Isuzu Trooper had a 3.1 litre version of the same engine.
Can you think of any other big capacity four cylinder engines that were fitted to production passenger cars?

not in a car but big none the less:
One of the largest inline-four engines is the MAN B&W 4K90 marine engine. This two stroke turbo-diesel has a giant displacement of 6,489 L. This results from a massive 0.9 meter bore and 2.5 meter stroke. The 4k90 engine develops 18,280 kW (24,854 PS; 24,514 hp) at 94 rpm and weighs 787 tons
but I would honestly think that it would be a big diesel engine somewhere that would be the biggest rather than a petrol

Ok so it's not 4 cyclinder but look at the umpa iumpas working on this crank! Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96, the world’s biggest engine, has a weight of 2.3 million kilogrammes. If the weight of the average adult person is 70 kilogrammes, this world’s biggest engine has a weight equivalent to the weight of 33,000 people. that's big

that .1 making all the difference to just 4ltrs it puts the last 3 in the power output of a colossal 153hp but only if you have the intercooled turbo, NA diesel is 115hp

International Harvester used a 196 ci 4 cylinder engine in their Scout 4x4 and Pontiac used a 195 ci 4 in the Tempest. Both these engines consisted of a single bank of an existing V8, and translate to about 3.2 litre.

As said above I always thought that the 944 S2 (with it's 3.0l 4 cyl) was the biggest 4 cyl production engine made. Maybe only the biggest petrol since the isuzu has a 3.1 4cyl derv.

Biggest: 1911 Fiat S74: "The Fiat S76 was produced in 1912 and featured a 28-liter four-cylinder engine. The cars were driven by drivers such as Felice Nazzaro, Antonio Fagnano, and Pietro Bordino. The cars, according to records two were created, were used for racing and for attempting speed records."www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z14440/Fiat-S74.aspx

wasnt the farina princess a 4.2 4 pot engine? ? No chap, the Vanden Plas 4 Litre R had a Rolls-designed straight six called the FB70. I remember Dugong_father having an old Bayliner 1952 with a car derived OMC four pot that was 3.1 litres or something daft. It had a massive 110 bhp and was as rough as a badger's clack.

Toyota do a 4.1L in their mega cruiser. Would that be this one; The 15B-F is a 4.1 L (4104 cc) inline 4 sixteen valve OHV direct injection diesel engine (same configuration as the 15B-FTE but no turbo and intercooler). Bore is 108 mm and stroke is 112 mm. Output is 115 hp (85 kW) at 3200 rpm and 214 ft·lbf (290 N·m) of torque at 2000 rpm.

or this one:
15B-FTE The 15B-FTE is a 4.1 L (4104 cc) inline 4 sixteen valve OHV direct injection turbo intercooled diesel engine. Bore is 108 mm and stroke is 112 mm, with a compression ratio of 17.8:1. Output is 153 hp (114 kW) at 3200 rpm with 282 ft·lbf (382 N·m) of torque at 1800 rpm.

By far not the biggest with 600cc, but interesting so I though I'll add this one... Ariel Square Four: And: 6.1l! "The Kubota M135X is a tractor with a 6.1 L inline-four. This turbo-diesel engine has a bore of 118 mm (4.6 in) and a relative long stroke of 140 mm (5.5 in)". It's got 4 wheels so it's a car, right? ;D

Most 4 pot petrol engines only go up to around 2.3 or 2.5 these days due to the desire for smooth quiet engines, anything around the 2.3 size starts to suffer from vibration issues and needs internal balancers to compensate, which adds to cost and complication.
Most manufactures would rather add more cylinders instead as its better for marketing and its mostly posher cars with bigger engines so kind of expected.
Diesels can go bigger as they usually rev lower and people expect them to vibrate anyway.
