Hi everyone, hope someone can help. I have recently bought a MK3 1.3 Polo GT. Love the car, very nippy.. BUT.. A fortnight ago I had a new head gasket fitted and since then, especially when I have been pulling away the car has really been struggling to go (jolting). But yesterday while I was going over the infamous bumpy part of the M62 I was going 70mph in 5th and my revs all of a sudden went from 40 straight to 20 and back up again really quickly making the car pretty much bounce down the motorway so now I need to do something about it! My boyfriend thinks that it might be gunk at the bottom of the fuel tank and with the bouncing over the bumps its all just mixing? Still wouldn't explain why it does it when I first start driving it in the day... maybe the engine needs to warm up first?? I dunno. Any answers would be much appreciated. Thanks. Zoe. ;D Attachments:

mate of mine had a few of these and he seemed to always be needing to replace the sensors (temp) would be worth checking leads, dizzy etc first. temp sender tho is in the Right hand side of your engine you have the distributor, underneath that is the thermostat housing. Sticking out of it are two sensors with mulitplugs plugged into them. The blue one tells the car when its warmed up and when to stop running lean etc. If its running fine when its warmed up, its likely to be a nackered sensor. maybe grab a few from scrappy and try em on see if it helps.

check the electrical connections. in particular pay attention to the plugs which go to the distributor, air flow meter and throttle body. my guess is one of these might have got knocked when doing the head-gasket. the hall sender on the distributor is prone to failing as its pretty delicate. Best fix is to swap to a 6n polo mpi distributor which has a better deisgn of hall sender and is fully compatible.

If the engine really dropped 2000 revs that quick the wheels would have locked, i'd say there a dodgy connection somewhere on the coil (as it's the coil that runs the rev counter) or somewhere in the ign side of things not fuel, fuel pproblems occure more softly not suddenly like that, sudden drops in power tend to be leccy (obv it;s haed to tell without being there), i'd check all the connections and if on points change the points and especialy the condensor.

Thanks for all your responses. Me and my boyfriend are gonna spend the weekend looking at her and I'll update you with what the problem is.

is it lacking power all of the time aswell? and only since the head gasket change? if so make sure the cambelt timing is correct and also the ignition timing, dizzy could just need altering. other faults sounds electrical.

Until the engine has heated up yeah it does lack power. We figured it was probably the blue temp sender that was causing most of the problems, so we have replaced it as well as checked and cleaned all connections under the bonnet of rust, limescale etc. Seems okay so far, I have a long journey ahead of me tomorrow, so we'll soon find out haha. Yeah we'll have a look a make sure the cambelt timing is alright. Thanks.
