There's what looks like an absolutely mint X300 4.0 Sport in For Sale at the moment for £1250 (see link). I just ran an insurance quote, and I could have it full comp for £275, and tax is £220, so not the end of the world. Then I did a bit of a web search, and found that people get around 30mpg on a motorway run out of these. I'm going to need a new daily next year, I suspect I might have found it! (not this one, sadly, because it looks perfect, but something very like it) retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=FSW&action=display&thread=144817

I've been eyeing that one as well. Unfortunately our XJ Sport 4.0L got stolen a few months back and crushed (the police have charged the scrotes though). It was cosmetically challenged but my wife put over 30,000 miles on it in a couple of years driving with hardly any issues. Possibly the best £600 I've ever spent on a car.
Also, there's an ex-jag engineer who manufactures a revised bracket for the crank sensor which advances the timing about 5 degs from the factory setting - for £60 it's a brilliant mod - car feels snappier off the line and our stop and go fuel economy picked up by about 3 mpg and motorway fuel economy by about 2mpg. Well worth getting.

I really want one now. I do 120 mile round trips 3 days a week, and then sporadically have to go to Leicester Derbyshire etc. This would make the long trips (on expensive) such a pleasure, and if I commuted more often on my 125 motorbike, the fuel bills for the commute could actually go DOWN. (currently 40 mpg in my Hijet. Make it 30 in the Jag for 40% of the time, and 80 on the bike for the other 60%, and I'm actually winning)

I just got my tax reminder, and realised at the end of February I have owned this car for 6 months, how time has flown. In this time the car has performed without fault. It goes like a bullet when needed, and when driven normally its pretty good on fuel. 28mpg is normal at 70-75mph cruising.

I could live with that. I'm imagining myself wafting to some of my Northern destinations on a leather upholstered cloud. It appeals to me.

Thats why I bought it, I am in Leeds, my family are all around Newcastle area, our lasses are in Wales and London. I work silly hours in a works van, so it never gets touched during the week. But when I want to go visit friends and family, its a peach. Best thing is, on the motorways its not much worse on fuel than my old celica or our lasses bmw compact. It just glides along in silence up the motorways.

I've been doing a bit of research on these, and I'm interested to note that the Daimler versions of everything seem to start at more like £1800, when there are plenty of Jags at £500. I know the Daimler was the highest spec, but I hadn't expected it to make so much difference at 15 years old. I must admit, I'm a sucker for a fluted grille and walnut picnic tables, but it looks like I'll have to content myself with the Jag models.....

I think some of the soveriegn ones came with things like the walnut picnic table, but I am not 100% certain

I towed two 70's XJ6's for scrap many years ago, I would never have imagined a car could rot so badly. I'd love one myself but would be very wary.

I'm sure picnic tables were put on some of the Jag models too. So what I'm looking for is LWB, 4 litre, picnic tables, half wood wheel, lowish mileage, minimal rust, full cream leather, no known issues and lpg, for about £600 please Santa!

Yeah, looks like picnic tables and their related seat backs show up on eBay. I should focus on the LPG part!

I hate my series 3. Truly want to punch its lights in. Then again I love it like a fresh smelling puppy dog. But then again it wants scrapping Or hugging and squeezing til it drops its oil.
This is what Jag ownership has been for me thus far.its turned me into a mechanoschizo. Wouldn't change the old girl for anything else though.

As with most of the above XJ40 all day long, I had the 3.6 Owned her for 2 years or so, never had a problem apart from the onboard computer forever popping up with irrelevant messages, which you get used to everything worked, and it was so so comfortable, and kick down was quite impressive for a big lass!

I've been extensively searching back seat photos on eBay, and I have found them on some Jags too. I suspect they were standard on the Daimler, extra cost option on everything else.

I don't think the Series I-III Jaguars or Daimlers had picnic tables. I don't know enough about them to be sure though.
I thought they were reintroduced with the XJ40. All versions of the XJ40 Daimler had picnic tables set in the back of the front seats.
Picnic tables were never offered as an extra on the Jaguar XJ6 or Sovereign - only on the Daimler version.
The exception to this are cars from the 'Insignia' range. They could be bought either as a Jaguar or a Daimler - only the grille and badging was different.
From late 1992 until the end of production, with the Insignia, Jaguar offered an XJ40 with a full leather interior trimmed in an ultra soft semi-aniline leather in a set of special colours. These had picnic tables. Everything that wasn't wood, carpet or glass in the interior was leather trimmed. They're almost like a Rolls-Royce.
Other than the Insignia cars, no Jaguar XJ40s were officially made with picnic tables - only the Daimler version had them. There may be cars out there which have had the picnic tables fitted to them, but this will have been a special order thing - Jaguar made quite a lot of cars to the first owner's unique specification. They would even paint the car in a unique colour supplied by the owner, if they paid enough. There are several XJ40s with unique but original paint and trim combinations. I guess this flexibility is a product of the greater degree of hand building in a Jaguar than in one of its German rivals.
I'm fairly sure that only the X300 Daimler was available with picnic tables - I have never seen a Jaguar X300 with them (except USA spec, of course - they don't get the Daimler!)

This is what Jag ownership has been for me thus far.its turned me into a mechanoschizo. Wouldn't change the old girl for anything else though. There needs to be a support group for people like us. I often want to give my Series 3 a good kicking, but then I'd have to fix it more..
