Well, what a difference a day makes. Today was the day of reckoning. 18 months after buying the Gsi and letting the poor old girl sit for most of that time, moving house and taking on a huge renovation project, there were only 2 options. As I didn't want to see the car deteriorate further, I decided my choices were: 1. Sell the car before it dissolves in the winter rain (and accept that a 20 year old Cav Gsi with no MOT would almost inevitably be broken for its golden XE engine); 2. Clear all the curse word out of the garage (it was full to the beams, literally) and see if it will fit (initial measurements were looking iffy). Fortunately the GSi gods were looking down on the old girl and her life has been considerably extended as of today. House renovation is still my main priority, but when it's looking something like it, I will now have the joy of a half tidy car still waiting patiently for my attention. Watch this space.

nice to see another cav resuced from being scrapped for its golden egg engine But I know what you mean here: House renovation is still my main priority, but when it's looking something like it, I will now have the joy of a half tidy car still waiting patiently for my attention. Watch this space. I havent had time to touch my project and we still have to rescue our old mk2 fez, but the house has to come first.

Cav GSis are pretty darn rare now, between being broken for the engine and rotting out the rear chassis legs.
Look forward to seeing stuff happen. T

I do like a nice Cav, and I still miss my '93 poverty spec V6, even if it was cripplingly expensive to run 5 years ago when I gave it away for free (yes, free, gratis, zip, zilch, nowt, nada, nothing, eff-all etc), god alone knows how much it would cost to run now! And it was just nicely run in at 170k miles..... The bloody thing got me nicked for speeding through the Hanger Lane underpass on the A40, I turned off the radio, cracked the window, slipped it into second and nailed the loud pedal all the way to the red line, only to find that I was being followed by an unmarked plod-mobile

Cheers for the replies. I used to drive my original Gsi a bit like I was John Cleland, and the car begged for more. Handling was fantastic and the xe lump just wanted to be ragged. Anyway, I guess I should start a proper build thread following on from what I've posted so far.... My interest in Cavalier GSi's started in 2004 when I sold my original GSi through epic MOT failure (back end rot). Despite owning a wide range of cars in the meantime, I always missed the GSi and told myself that someday I would buy another. My original GSi Moving forward to June 2010, this beauty became available in Devon. It came with masses of paperwork and had lived in the Devon area for most of its life. White wasn’t my first choice in colour, but the moreI looked at the advert, the more I came around to it. By the time I called, the car had provisionally sold to someone. Gutted! I made it clear to the owner that if there was any messing around at all, I would be straight up there with the full asking price. 24 hours later the phone rang and I couldn’t say no... Bringing back the new one! First thing on the list was replace the back lights with original GSi smoked ones. It took ages to remove the ****** things; an owner at some point had loaded the seals with silicone sealant, and it had well and truly bonded everything in tight. I was suitably impressed to find the metal behind the lights was solid and in really good condition. Next. I didn’t feel the love for the DTM 17” alloys from day one. Soon after, I managed to locate a set of Cav slabs for £100 – the same price I sold the DTM alloys for. Result. Before they were bolted on, my brother mentioned that he had a set of Momo arrows which should fit straight on. For a laugh, we gave them a go and they actually looked pretty good for a period wheel. My brother tried to lower the back end of the car manually, but it didn’t do a lot! He’s hanging onto the arrows for his own project, but if he doesn’t use them, I may try them in anthracite... Anyway, the slabs are now fitted: At about the same time I visited a lad in Plymouth who was breaking a black GSi and bought a load of bits from him, including an original space saver wheel, to replace the rusty steel which sat in my spare wheel well. Little touches but well worth the hassle. I also whipped off the rear towbar, which looked curse word and wasn’t needed. I was impressed to find the rear panel behind the bumper was in excellent condition too. No photos unfortunately. Next, I located a mint interior. My interior was in good condition apart from the driver’s seat which had worn. Out with the old, and in with the new. Since this, I have bought some genuine Morette headlights, a decent spec alarm and immobiliser, a scorpion stainless exhaust system to match the existing Scorpion back box, and a fifth slab alloy wheel (always handy as they seem to be becoming much harder to find now). The car just before going into storage: The plan is now to keep the car in dry storage over the winter, drag her out for welding and MOT in the spring, then get the car back on the road after a 2 year hiatus. Really looking forward to it! ;D I’m still looking for several bits including a dark grey/black carpet (were these standard in the sri models?) as well as a few other parts if anyone knows of any Sri's or Gsi's breaking? I’ll keep the thread updated as and when, although progress may be sporadic!

Cheers lads, I'm hoping the welding won't be too bad either. For Mot will probably be a few small plates, including on sills. For a good job though, I think I'll have both sills replaced, along with one rear arch (other has been done already), plus a few other bits. Couple of questions - anyone know a really neat welder in Cornwall? Anyone know if I can buy coilovers anywhere for the car? Had a look on the 'bay, but couldn't see anything at all?

After leaving the GSi in the garage for a couple of months untouched, I dragged her out into the daylight today. First impression? The XE sounded glorious as soon as it fired, and I still can't get over the fact this one has no tapping from cold whatsoever. Just listening to that sound is enough for the car to justify its space in the garage. However, I was disappointed to see the interior starting to go mouldy in places. My first thought was that the garage was damp, but I quickly worked out that the rubber matting under the carpets, which became damp due to a leak prior to storage, must have still been damp. I thought I'd dried the car out well enough, but further inspection reveals it's still slightly damp feeling . Without further ado, I grabbed this www.homeandSpammy spam spam spam, no thank you, man..co.uk/productimages/ebac-dd2650-smart-control-dehumidifer.jpg[/img] and it's now sat in the footwell, doing its duties. I'll give it 2-3 days and see how it's doing. In the meantime, she's tucked back up for the rest of winter, patiently awaiting her 20th birthday next month! In the meantime, I'm looking for a decent welder/fabricator in the Cornwall area if anyone knows of one? The plan is for the car repair work to begin late spring/early summer if the house renovation I'm currently working on is progressed enough.

Having had a Cav 4x4 until recently, the areas you need to look at are:
Boot floor where it joins the rear valance - mine was actually caused by the centre mount on the (OE) boot spoiler rusting, allowing the spoiler to lift from the bootlid slightly and water to get in. 1 spanner rating for any decent welder.
Sills - 2 spanner rating for any decent welder.
Rear arches - this is important; any non-decent welder won't find this particularly challenging but they won't do it properly. You need a decent welder who'll do a proper job, ie repair the inner as well as outer arches, not just stuff it with filler. As with most cars, inner arch repair panels aren't available and need to be fabricated. These have a double curvature and are hard - 4 spanner rating done properly!
Rear spring mounts - my car was ok but rot in the chassis rails above the rear springs is a killer for these cars. It's not a hard welding job but there's a lot of prep work - 3 spanner rating for a decent welder.
All in all it's about 1 week work for a pro welder I should think.

Update time. I never got a quote back (or even an acknowledgement) from the fabricator mentioned above, but I thought it was high time I peeled the sill skirts off for a butchers. Sun shining, car starts without as much as a tap after a 3 month slumber. Sills covers off... Drivers side is fairly tidy. Passenger side much more crusty: Looking up further into recess: Looks like she's still rocking her original sills, which isn't bad for 20 years of work and moisture retention from the skirts! The drivers side has been plated at the back which makes it look much more solid overall. Obviously outer sills will need replacing, and it looks like fab work will be needed to add some shape back to parts of the inners. However, the structure inside looks remarkably solid, and there are traces of Waxoil inside (not sure if VX did this when new?). The underside of the car also looks pretty solid, and considering what the car is, its age and the fact it has been sitting around for 2 years, it's really not that bad. Main thing is now trying to get a figure for the work to be done, and finding someone who won't make a royal cock up of it. Answers on postcards please...
