Right, Opinions on where to locate the front number plate on my RX7 please. I've already bought a rectangular plate with import size letters (my car's an import so it's legal) and it's 9" x 7" and I was going to mount it offset to the offside of the car in between the lower driving lamp and the main intake but I had a look yesterday and I think it just looks ar$e like that. So, please give me your opinion on what would look best. I'm leaning towards a vinyl plate on the lower lip of the bumper in standard type font etc and just hope I don't get pulled. I won't be driving it every day to work (16mpg) but it will get used and used properly. Cheers AL.

Difficult decision imo, especally with stuff like Rexs and Supras even ones with standard bumpers don't look right with the number plates on the front. Always looks like they designed the car to be as pretty as possible, then the number plates mounts were an afterthought. Aftermarket bumper only make it worse. TBH I think you got it right with the vinyl plate on the lower lip, as you said it ain't legal but I'd risk it. So..... I'm leaning towards a vinyl plate on the lower lip of the bumper in standard type font etc and just hope I don't get pulled. +1 Edit: lovely car one of the best drivers cars ever IMO. They just feel so right to drive!

Vinyl plates used to be everywhere when I were a lad (late '70s/early '80s). When did they become illegal?

When did they become illegal? Think it was some time ago, due to there being no company name, post code or BSAU stamp. However they are still easy to get hold of (the motorfactor I work at still has them on the shelf, sold as a sign only officer )

On the dashboard. Say it fell off. It's on the dashboard at the moment but it's doing my head in as it rattles and tweaks my deep seated OCD hatred of rattles and squeaks ;D AL.

Saw a GTR where it was in the middle under the intake but tilted back at 45 degrees, looked purposeful

on the back of the sun visor so you can flip it down and it can be seen I had the same problem with my MR2 as they just don't work with uk plates, mine is at the wrong angle on the top of my bumper now

However they are still easy to get hold of (the motorfactor I work at still has them on the shelf, sold as a sign only officer ) If the vehicle is pre-2001, then the whole BSAU/postcode/makers mark doesn't apply, IF the numberplate was also manufactured before 2001. If like to see a Policeman prove how old the number plate is...

It's bad that you have to put a numberplate on the front, it looks so good without one. Personally, if I *had* to put a plate on it would be vinyl sticky or somehow angled so that it was less visible.

The numberplate has to be on the forwardmost section of a vehicle - you can technically get a fine for plonking it behind your windscreen... if you get pulled by a copper, who's just found out his wife has been sleeping with the milkman.... The only real reason vinyl stickers aint legal, is because 99.9% of them that get made, aren't reflective, and it has to be a PLATE (ie: removeable, and flat. A sticker doesn't count for some reason) Why not just get a normal size plate, and have it at 45 degrees on the bottom lip? Might need to be mounted vertical to pass the MOT, but usually don't cause any grief with coppers, as ANPR cams can still usually read them got a mate who takes his FC drifting - he's stuck his plate on the flat section, between the headlamps. Looks quite good! Made his bumper removable too, as he was buying a new one every 4 months

Take it off the dashboard and put it on the floor!
If you get pulled argue motorbikes don't have front plates!
Or do as the rally boys do and have a hinged numberplate!

Finally went for a stick-on. I think it looks the most appropriate whilst still looking legal. Cheers AL

Seems the best solution in the balance between elegant -vs- practical -vs- legal.
Nice job.
