I'm looking for something cheap & fun that absolutely has to be retro.
Preferably something that is open to modification (in both looks and performance). I'm totally open minded, will consider absolutely anything.
Budget: £800.
This will be used as a daily too. Fuel costs aren't an issue however as my daily commute it only a 12 mile round trip.
I'll consider anything from quick cruisers to rough and ragged, grab them by the scruff of the neck and give them a good shake type cars...
Idea's/Recomendations/Experiences?

mk2 scirocco's can be had for next to nothing, doesnt seem to be any scene tax yet. they're nippy, fun to drive, can get decent mpg, reliable and use the mk1 golf platform to they're open to tons of mods.

Volvo. Bags of fun on a budget. Also make brilliant cruisers with big comfy seats. If you want mega budget, get yourself a 340/360. £800 will buy you a very tidy one, I believe there's a pre-lowered red 3 door on ebay at the mo...
Oh, most importantly - RWD ;D

I've got a 1988 honda prelude which my uncle has owned since new!
52000 miles, every mot, service history, new mot, taxed till end of the month.
Even has the original bill of sale for £11500 in 1988!
Search 3rd gen prelude on google and check out the yellow one on stanceworks for simple but effective mods.
Wheels are 4x100 fitment to so its right on for modding.
I'm after £675 for it or nearest offer.

MR2 Mk1 great fun, fast handles lots of parts available to modify including fitting larger engines see www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/ You can pick up a good one from £500 if your careful what you buy. If you look after it/improve it tour get your money back when you come to sell

Scirocco mk2 Prelude Gen. 2 Porsche 924/944 Volvo 340 Toyota Corolla AE81 Peugeot 104 I find searching on ebay for cars from 1975 to 1989 (putting -range -land -shogun -pajero -jaguar -mercedes -bmw in the search bar to remove the millions of 4x4's/OTR saloons).

mk1 mr2 is the way to go for ultimate super cheap reliable fast rwd fun. 2 seater mid engine rwd car with pop ups tbar and electric everything! whats not to like. very high revving at fast motorway cruising speed but they will go quickly and top out at just under 130. you can have fun with them on a daily basis. i comute a 30 mile round trip daily and there is almost always some sideways action involved. not a single problem or breakdown in the last 12k miles. as for modification? on twobrutal as mentioned before people are running 300bhp+ 3sgte and v6 cars. cheap as chips, even tho I'm trying to sell one for twice as much, ive just seen one with tax and mot for £400 in bristol. so much car for so little money. peanuts. preludes and sciroccos are good choices but have got to be the two most in need of rwd cars of all time.

Ford Sierra? Still cheap to buy (although being a RWD Ford values are bound to be increasing soon), cheap to modify with excellent aftermarket support and interchangeability with other Fords, easy and cheap to fix, mechanically strong and simple. Having said that though they do rust, although no worse than a lot of cars of this era. I've owned 5 and I love them well worth a look IMO. mx5 if you can get one in that price range, cant get much more fun than that ;D if not silvia S12/s13. can get them for £800 Ive seen them. An £800 MX5 will be infinitely better than an £800 S13 (cheap ones from what I've seen end up being expensive in the long run). Although good cheap S12 Silvias do appear so worth a look. MX5 are excellent cars you only have to see how many forum users currently own or have owned them, they have few faults and drive amazingly.

Sierra - here we go again! He has an illness, it's not his fault.
