Quite possibly, many barely out of short trousers who have to stick labels on everything to understand the semantics of what makes things work...or doesnt.
There is no more Barry boy than Retro Ride or any other form of modifying cars because modifying is modifying irrespective of how you do it or what you do, right? Its just a nice name to put into a nice box. Funny really, years back you had all sorts of modified cars rubbing shoulders with eachother, the good the great and the bloody awful, nobody cared. We now have a generation where you have to wear the "right" trainers and have the car modified "right"
Sad times.

You do make an interesting point, but you've probably walked into the wrong gin joint to make people see it.
You also seem to be pushing two different points; one about good cars modified to dubious tastes, another about how the scene has become heavily pigeonholed.
Clarity and definition is your friend.
