I bought a set of split rims and the rears are completely caked in years, maybe even decades worth of nasty, thick solidified brake dust.
After I split the wheels today, I had a go at cleaning one up. It's 80% there, but has cost me about half a bottle of Mr Muscle, a bit of Wonder Wheels, and loads of scotch pads etc.
Any ideas on a really harsh cleaner? I might get some Fairy Power spray tomorrow as a mate recommends it. Albelit not for dust of this magnitude.
The cheaper the better! The rear section, baskets(?) are being painted black so even if there's something out there that will ruin the surface it should be fine.
Cheers. ;D

try cif cream, its got little beads in it so its pretty abrahsive, get the lemon one as the citrus does help a bit and use a scouring pad and some hot water, as hot as your hands can take!

have used it to clean exhaust tips, not brake dust but tar and other road grime, so may help!

I always start by putting wheels in the dishwasher at 60 degrees.

Stick the wheel in a binbag, and buy a few pounds worth of cheap own-brand coke from asda/tesco/etc
Pour enough coke in to cover the wheel, seal it up, and then leave it for a couple of days
If it hasn't totally softened it, it will at least have made your job easier!
Mr Muscle Oven cleaner is caustic soda, so should do the job.... but I'm not sure what would happen if it's put on aluminium? Probably not anything good tbh

I've had great success with Mortar Stain Remover - you'll find it in the builder's merchants. If you're refurbing it's ideal, as it can discolour paint and lacquer.
It's like a super strong version of WonderWheels! Don't leave it on there too long, and wear some gloves and eye protection, it's pretty strong acid!

Cheers for the replies lads. i tried all of the above except the coke and had very minimal success.
A blue Scotch-Brite wheel in the drill was right on the money though! Dunno why I never thought of that before lol.

800/1000 grit wet and dry with some soapy water. Take it gently so as not to go down to the paint and it will come off in no time.
