Just look at the amount of cars on the road with lights not working and bald tyres. Then imagine them going around for up to 24 months in that state.
If anything it should be every 6 months

If anything it should be every 6 months thats funny, i don't see the need for MOT's, maybe if the police, policed unroadworthy cars instead of speeding ones, we'd see alot more crushed i do come from australia though perhaps if you built some higher quality cars, they wouldn't all fall apart :S

It's suprising, the MOT IMO is something that should happen MORE often, not less! Since when has anyone worried about "burden on the motorist"?
If they want to reduce the burden on the motorist. Free Roadtax would go a long way, or cheaper fuel! Not greater risk of being taken out by some of the shocking cars on the road! I remember in the motor trade down the auctions. Some shocking cars that hadn't even seen their first MOT! Some with over 150,000 miles on and one was touching 185,000 miles 2 months before it's first MOT! A lot can go wrong in that milage! Cars should be every 12 months from new like Lorrys. Or at LEAST make servicing compulsory over an MOT! One or the other. Servicing or MOT for the first 3 years. Then MOT every year regardless.

over 40% of vehicles fail their first MOT at 3 years so 4 would be nice and safe eh! Mean less trade for hard working garages too. The government keep bringing the idea back every so often just incase they haven wasted enough money talking about it last time I heard about the idea of MOT exemption for classics and nearly wet myself! I intend to keep my eye on that for whatever good it does.

Most new cars come with at least 3 years warranty and some come with 5 or 7 or lifetime warranties now.
So MOT'ing a new car after 4 years is fine in my book.
I also agree MOT should be every 6 months and £20-25 each time.

The current MOT system is totally wrong. Its rife with cheats. The MOT should be done at a government station that is not run as a business as such and has no affiliation with any repair garages.
I have purchased car with obviously dodgy MOT's and there is in reality nothing one can do to prove it.

IMO the systems fine as is,every year, easy peasy, two years would be ridiculous IMO,I can't see why the government think it's a good idea? I'm currently driving a transit which looks like it literally scraped through last time and unless I address the body issues now(which I am) it certainly won't see another!!!

new cars shouldn't be any less exempt from testing than old ones - tyres etc don't always last 4 years and nowadays nobody seems to bother driving round with them bald. in fact just knocking about i see many more new 'posh' cars with bald tyres on than older stuff.

I agree that MOT stations should be government run. I had a running argument with one station when they failed my very well sorted AX GTI on "poorly repaired corrosion", "Illegal exhaust modifications"" and "worn rear subframe bushes". I pointed out the "rear subframe bushes" couldn't be worn as there was no subframe, and the beam bushes were 2 months old, the plate over a hole in the floor was thicker and stronger welding than the original floor, and when I asked what he meant with the exhaust he tried to tell me my custom stainless was "bodged on from another car, a Micra I think". He said it was 350 quid to sort it all out, so I said I'll sort it myself and coee back, so he said they don't retest cars unless people pay them to do the work! I took it somewhere else who passed it straight away with an advisory for a chipped windscreen which the first garage didn't spot, and then went back with the cert and demanded my money back. They were just trying to make work for themselves! The other tester even commented on how strong my welding was! Tw@ts

I have purchased car with obviously dodgy MOT's and there is in reality nothing one can do to prove it. MOT stations are goverment stations, well VOSA, a government appointed body. If you feel you've been cheated cotact VOSA and they will]/i] act on it.
