I've had a soft spot for these ever since I first saw one at the 1994 Motor Show (that one wasn't painted, it was just on show in polished aluminum ) I don't know much about them but I wouldn't have thought the 2.8 version to be that quite or cheap to run due to the weight of the car but if you can afford the running cost I can't imagine many better cars to cruise about in for that kind of money.

If you're buying one, may as well go for the V8 and pretend you're in Ronin:

My mate bought one, two of us used it to drive to drive to Germany and back, was beautiful.
Don't know much about them mechanically or what to look for, but, interior wise it was great. Just kept going the whole way. Seats were quite 'solid' I suppose, not as soft as you would think, but very sturdy.
Good luck. I would have one tomorrow

I picked one up for £100 last year, V6 on gas, lacking an MOT. Great cars, well specc'd 'bahn-stormers - small ones are ok on juice, gas makes them a practical daily. Spares are readily available - although 'specialists' will try to make you think otherwise! Consumables are as cheap as any other car these days (unless you get an S, with monster brakes). My only niggle with these is the low roofline - they feel quite snug from the inside; I guess the width doesn't help here, as it makes it seem lower than it probably is. If you're looking at a cheap one you shouldn't really lose money either; unless you ruin it, obviously! Here's my bargain barge - I actually sold it here on RR within 1/2 an hour of putting the ad up! Joe.

Haha, yeah it was definately a bit of a steal! One of those right-time right-place things.
I got it to strip it, but it was too good and I didn't have the heart; so put it up on here instead!

I'll just leave my old one here... Do get a V8, the V6 will do about the same MPG and won't perform or sound as nice. Expect high teens/low 20's round town, but the 4.2 will break into the 30's on a run. Make sure the cambelt isn't due, or you're looking at in excess of a £600 straight away. Make sure you don't buy a cheap facelift with a 5-speed gearbox, they are reknown for breaking, and the earlier 4-speeds are much more bulletproof. Don't be worried about tired suspension bits, a lot of it is shared with the Passat, and you can get all of the upper/lower arms and droplinks pretty cheaply.

I've had a soft spot for these ever since I first saw one at the 1994 Motor Show (that one wasn't painted, it was just on show in polished aluminum ) I could get busy with some paint stripper and some wet'n'dry? The only thing I have heard is that if you accidently hit a kerb hard the subframe cracks. The a8 seems completely ignored by most barge types and this car was 60k 13 years ago! Must be one of the most depreciating cars in history.

The Rat-Look proof car... I don't even think the ally used in these oxidises to that white powdery finish.

Ive borrowed a couple of these both off the same mate actually, first one was a 4.2 V8 with the 4 speed, bloody lovely car that was, it has all the S bits but wasnt actually one so was cheaper to insure, that got knicked and he got an S8 with the 5 speed box, that was flippen mental, averaged 10 mpg as it was hooned everywhere, Great cars one I WILL OWN one day, hell if a 4.2 came up cheap now id buy it and store it on a mates farm where at least it can have a short move every week till i can proper afford it.
got chatting to varouis other owners too and they all raved about em especially the 4sp ones as no trans issues with em

nice cruisers but notorious for fecked boxes. Like I said in my first post, only the later 5-speed boxes were trouble. The early 4-speed autobox was bulletproof.

I had probably the worst A8 in the world...not the cars fault, but the previous owner (the proprietor of a local garage!) bodged the life out of it...every time I fixed one of his bodges, another one came to light....the most fun "feature" was when the ABS would kick in randomly and for no reason at all, usually in the fast lane of the motorway.... It was a nice car though, was a 4.2 sport, so it had the spokey wheels and leather Recaros (my favourite part of the whole car!), but it was a car that totally stripped me of any mojo and is the one that still haunts me now..... At least I know not to use that garage ever! Here's the offending item....

Get one - simple. I think my biggest regret was selling on my V8.... loved every second behind the wheel of it. I only sold on as I wanted the S class - but the 'primo' example advertised turned out to be a complete lemon so I walked away. I'll definitely have another one in the near future...... always on my searches when 'just looking'
