Hi All, I have just painted some chequers on the bonnet of the Saab and the masking tape had left a horrid sticky residue, how can I remove this without damaging the fresh paintwork? Cheers, Stu.

Mkae sure the paintwork is nicely set/cured then wipe the sticky residue off with some lighter fluid squirted onto a very soft cloth. This stuff: Don't flood the cloth, but get enough on there to make it moist then wipe away, turning the cloth over and adding more fluid as it becomes clogged with residue. You might have to go over the area again with a fresh cloth and fresh lighter fluid becuase it sometimes leaves a very thing, light tacky film to the surface if the residue is quite thick to start with. Once done, buff the area with a soft dry cloth and it's all sorted. THere are lots of other chemicals you can use, including 'normal' pertrol, but I find these quite a bit harsher than lighter fluid. I've used it for about 20 years now without any problems. Great for getting sticky labels off pressies as well as many other things. It's always handy to have a tin stored away somewhere.

Robin beat me to it...and the Auto Glym stuff is supposed to be very good, but compared to the price of lighter fluid, I know what I'd rather use I've also never used the Auto Glym stuff myself, so can't vouch for it, but I certainly can for the stuff I recommended. ;D

Tim,
It is general glue.
Mystery and Robin, thanks very much, I have also been informed that WD40 is good for it aswell. As for the price of lighter fluid I think the Autoglym would be cheaper. £2.35 for 100mls of lighter fluid around here, bloody expensive when you think that is £23.50 a litre, but I am willing to give anything ago, I won't be using that curse word masking tape again.
Cheers,
Stu.

cheap masking tape is the work of the devil.
If its fresh paint I'm not sure I'd trust a toffee wheel not to marr it

If its fresh paint I'm not sure I'd trust a toffee wheel not to marr it Have to agree with this toffee wheel statement, My experience is they are a bit rough. I'd imagine most solvents will do.. but best to try on a small hidden area to see if it affects the finish.. Oh and I've found that thw current wilkinsons 50m 1.5" thick masking tape at about £3 a pop is pretty good at no residue. althoughh the longer you leave any masking tape the more chance it seems to leave residue..

I've found stuff call desolveit works pretty well or I've got some cheapy tar remover in a big blue bottle if I need something a little more aggressive, neither have marked paintwork.

Can you get eucalyptus oil over in the UK? It works a treat for getting left over stickyness off things.

I've used cheap and expensive masking tape, both can leave residue when its applied in sunlight, then left to bake on. Its more the method than the product.

Sugar soap?
Very cheap and you can choose how much to dilute it
edit: just thought i'd add that I'm a complete hypocrite and that I actually use the autoglym bug and tar remover.
