This may be a muppet question but I am about to take ownership (fingers crossed) of a 3 dr Nova. The car is on SORN but still MOT'd and very driveable.
It's only about 5 miles from home, question is am I OK towing it on a rope? It's the SORN thing that is confusing me.
Thanks for your help and I'll put some pictures up once I get it.

No I'm afraid that is illegal. If its on Sorn it is not allowed to have its all wheels on the road.
The clue is in the name Statutary OFF ROAD notification.
You are allowed to move it on a trailer or towing dolly (as long as it lifts a set of wheels off the road) though. Also if its driving to or from a prebooked MOT then its legal. (edit) or a by prior appointment to a place of repair at which MOT fails are to be rectified.

If you're on the way to a pre-booked MOT it doesn't have to be taxed as you can't tax it without the MOT. If it's already got an MOT, that won't wash as you can tax it .

Is be tempted to whack 6 months tax on it and drive it around for month before cashing in the tax as you always lose a months money when you cash a tax disc in

i think tho part of the new ruling you get some leway when purchasing a new vehicle
i drove 80 mile home with a car with no tax on a sunday - got a tug and said to the copper, sorry i got the train to fetch it, seller said it was taxed, here's my receipt and insurance details, i'll sort it tomorrow
he said ok, put a note on the system and let me on my way
personally for 5 miles i would chance driving it back

Remember thanks to the brilliant new ruling the car now can't be taxed unless it has an insurance policy on it

don't forget you have to SORN it as well once you get it home if you're not taxing it at all. SORN is not transferable.

Yeah, sorry, didn't make it too clear, I guess what I was getting at is that if you tax it for a month, you'll also have to insure it for a month, you can't just use day insurance when you want to use it, or drive it on some drive-any-car policies like you used to be able to.

This is true, technically, as soon as you are the 'new keeper', the old SORN no longer applies. You get a new sorn doc in the post when you send the V5 off. I'd tow it home anyway - but then I'm a ropey old codge like that. I'd drive it tbh, but then I'm insured that I can anyway.
