Possibly going to see one of these turds on thursday-
A chrome bumpered one
Any pointers?
Its got MOT til Feb, but has a gear selection problem -possibly clutch... are there any common faluts to look out for?
I know bodywork is a big problem- sills etc are big issues, Anyone got a guide of essential areas to check?
anything else I should be wary of?
Cheers

Yo All the MG owners are probably underneath their cars... I jest. It'll be a hydraulic clutch in that, so look under the car on the drivers side and you'll see the clutch slave cylinder on the side of the gearbox, just check that's not weeping. Likewise in the footwell, up above the pedals you'll see a hole that they go through and connect to the master cylinders. This was wet with fluid on mine so I replaced both, but they're a pain to bleed out, it took ages to get mine working. As for the rest of the car, ends of sills, doors collect water, inner sills, rear boot floor corners... Whilst you're in there, check to see if it's had new lower rear quarters and how well they've been welded/sealed afterwards. Everything is fairly basic and parts are plentiful, I like mine. Just don't buy one if you want to go too low...

Economy is poor even when driven carefully. I've had three and last ('74 M reg early rubber bumpered) struggled to 20 mpg ! If fitted with overdrive check it works and also all gears work with overdrive engaged and disenaged in both forward and reverse. There are two internal "clutches" as a V reg I had years ago (and converted to V8 ) had one fail so took ages to diagnose why it'd go forward but not reverse ! Paul h

1) Overdrive should never be engaged in reverse - there should be a cut-out (inhibitor switch) on the gearbox to prevent it from engagin except in 3rd and 4th. Test the switch by turning on the OD in 2nd - it should not engage.
2) My dad gets 30mpg from his roadster, although not in short trip town driving. Of course, if the engine setup (carb balancing, idle mixture, ignition timing, tappet clearances) is less than perfect it'll be both slower and thirstier.
3) If the clutch hydraulics are ok, then the clutch release arm or release bearing might be the issue. In which case, you have to take the engine out - there's not enough space to drop the box from under the car. Alternatively, the car might have been standing for a while, so the clutch might have siezed to the flywheel. Run the engine until it's warm, turn it off, put it in top gear, hold the brakes on and turn it over - that should free off the clutch if it's seized.

If it engages then there is a fault. Power goes though the overdrive unit whether engaged or not. If one of the internal clutches fails, as in my case, then the fact you can loose power, like a slipping clutch, in forward or reverse is weird symptom and difficult to diagnose unless you know that it can happen. It was only by discussing what could be the fault on a MG forum that I was told what had happened. Not sure if it's a common fault but one worth checking by simply reversing during test drive up a slight incline. It might be OK on the flat but the incline can be enough to cause the overdrive internal clutch to slip. Paul H

THanks for the suggestions of where to check etc- TBH the more I think of it, the more I realise that I need one like a hole in the head.. 4 cars is probably enough to be getting on with- none of them are "finished" so another project is just using time and money I don't have..

As I said I've had 3 x MGB GT's and now have a '72 Austin Sprite (post Healey agreement). This is my second with having a 1500 rubber bumper previously. MGB's are OK but personally I find Midgets / Sprites more fun. Accepted space is limited but once sitting down the driving position is similar. Paul H
